Pirate Mysteries: a tale of Monkeys, Masks and Hidden Objects!

This is my first game made with Unity, and it was a lot of fun using it! All GUI elements in the game are made using EZ GUI, and all graphics are using SM2. It is a casual 2D game in the hidden object genre.

The game is now on the Mac App Store, and will soon be released on the casual game portals. I’m working on the iPad/iPhone/Android builds too

Description:

Explore exotic lands while trying to save your demon possessed father in this fun and humorous hidden object game! Meet unique characters, solve ancient riddles and journey through an adventure that stretches from the shores of the Atlantic to the darkest corners in the Land of the Dead!

Features:

  • Embark on a grand hidden object quest!
  • Fun and comedic story line!
  • Meet strange and quirky characters along the way!
  • 30 unique and exciting locations!
  • 10 minigames that needs solving!

This looks fantastic! Super job on the locations and various gui elements. I am wondering if the ocean in the opening menu is the community ocean shader or an animated video? It looks wonderful.

Thanks for your kind words!

Ah, the intro ocean is an animated video that RetroStyle Games made for us, I really like it too

Looks very good!
Everything looks awsome, except for the actual text in the logo. The current one looks abit 90´s which is ok, but not great.

satrio: Ah, thanks for your comments, very kind of you

Hi,

Great looking example, looks very polished too. I’m trying to learn Unity with the hope of making a hidden object game. Any tips specific to building this kind of game?

Thanks
Dave.

Hey

Congratulations on the game. There’s alot of competition in the hidden-object game genre, It’s nice to see that you’ve got high quality art and lots of mini-game ideas. That’s a serious accomplishment.

Did you have one artist for the whole project? Because there seems to be some variance in the art styles, especially in the mini-games. It’s not that noticeable though.

I hope it does well. It’s alittle presumptuous, but a follow up post as to how your game does would be very enlightening. I’m keen to find some first hand evidence as whether it’s still possible for an indie to make a profit in the highly-competitive genres.

Ah, cool to hear that! First thing, using SpriteManager 2 and EZGUI helped a ton, so I recommend using those!

Other than that, the trickiest thing, not being that experienced with Unity, was figuring out how to check where you clicked by “converting” the mouse position to the pixels on the object image you clicked on, basically using pixel-perfect collision detection.

I’ve posted the code I used here though if you need to do it as well

Thanks for your very kind words! Really appreciate it

Ah, actually, we first used one team to do all the graphics, they did a good job, but some of the minigames and GUI stuff weren’t that good, so we used RetroStyle Games afterwards on what we thought needed to be re-done. I’m really happy with what they made though

No problem, I’ll try to remember to add a post about how the game’s done afterwards! The casual market, especially hidden object scene, is filled with tons and tons of high quality games these days, so it seems like just the bigger guys can afford the risk there…

Thanks for the reply, and good luck!

Thanks for the tips and code, i’m sure that will come in useful as i begin to figure out Unity a little further. Agreed with the last poster, the art work looks pretty sweet. I’ve being doing quite a bit of investigation into this genre recently and it’s quite surprising how far you can go with so little. The artwork definitely makes all the difference. Speaking of artwork, to make a shameless plug :stuck_out_tongue: check out my website if you plan on making another HOG and outsourcing  lol http://www.davidedwards.me

Thanks again,
Dave.

Oh, checked out your website now, awesome stuff you’ve done! Bookmarked
