Hi!
So I just started working on some pixel art, and I would like to know if u guys could tell me some proportions about character and background.
Usually I draw my characters as 128x128 and I would like to know how the other people that worked with pixel art used this proportion. I mean, whats the size you guys would recomend me using to draw a background and how to work on these proportions. Cause I dont want to make my character overly detailed comparing to the background. I watched a few tutorials on youtube about this, but usually people tell how to draw characters, not focusing on dimensions and background.
Thanks!
There is no standard, the art is what you make it. If you think your character is too detailed in comparison to the background just make the background more detailed or the character less detailed. Or leave it as is, the thing about art is that anything can look good depending on the artist.
like brigas said, there is no standard.
Personally, I prefer to do characters 64 x 64 for my current project, and the background tiles (If tiling) 32 x 32. I found otherwise the backgrounds I drew looked ‘too big’ for the character.
That said, try doing one small scene and non animated character (or only a few animations, if you want to see your character move) , and you can put them together either in unity or an art program and see how the look in comparison. I think half the reason I do tiles half the size of the character is because when I draw them I make the details ‘bigger’ than they should be in proportion to their apparent size, so having them half the characters size works for me (If that makes sense)
Long story short, it probably depends on how you do your own art detailing… this is just what worked for me and is by no means a ‘catch all’ or anything.
