Pixel Art Software? Photoshop or something else?

Hi,

I wanted to ask which software are you using for drawing pixel art? Do you use Photoshop or some special software?

People will tell you you can use anything at all - Paint.NET, Gimp, Photoshop. And that’s true. You can draw anything you will ever need for pixel art in those programs.
If you want something a bit more specialized though, there are quite a few programs out there you can try.

The best one is probably Aseprite, but I know some people heavily dislike the interface. I don’t and I use it all the time. This one works especially well for animation.
Then there’s PyxelEdit. I also use this, because it has great functionality for tilemaps. But for animation it’s a bit crude.

GraphicsGale and Pixlr are also quite good.

That being said - if you can’t make a good sprite in Paint, you won’t with these programs. See them as software that strips out all of the functionality from Photoshop that you don’t need with Pixel Art.

Asesprite and Pyxeledit are both amazing. But if you have Photoshop you can use that, too. The guys who are making Crawl with Unity use Photoshop for their pixel art.
