Pixelized Trails

Hi all,

I played Risk of Rain and Luftrausers recently and fell in love with the pixel art style. I’ve being doing my best to ape the style and pixel-ize my own stuff. One thing that I haven’t really figured out how to do is pixel trails like they have in those games. There’s a screenshot of Luftrausers below that shows what I mean.

If you look closely (which granted is a bit tough with the sepia) you’ll see that the trail is made up of tiny disjoint pixels rather than one curved trail like what we have with Unity’s trail renderer. Does anyone know how they pull this off?

Hi! You could render your trails into a low resolution off-screen render texture and composite that with the main render target, before rendering the rest of your scene.
Remember to use point filtering to get that nice pixelated look.
