PlayStation Mobile opens the floodgates for all game developers

I have to say - having read that article (not looking at the actual portal, since I’m at work) - big win for the indie community. Another distribution channel is always appreciated!

Anyone know how easy it will be to put a Unity game on this store?

So at least there wont be any fremium games right now.

Be great to have Unity working with Sony’s sdk. Is it feasible ?

I think we should pool in for Prime31 to ‘make it so’.

Too bad Sony’s sinking like the titanic .

Please… sinking like lead in the Bermuda triangle more like it!

(I just wanted to say that… I don’t know about Sonys economic status.)

Unity can not target it and will likely never.
UT has made it pretty clear in the past that they don’t consider WP7 / WP7.5 a reasonable target and the PSMobile kit is a lot like it as its also C# + an XNA alike graphics layer.

And that was despite Windows Phone 7 having a much larger install base than the Vita which has about 2.5M sold devices world wide at the time (got one myself as dev device as I consider it a very interesting.
Reason is that the Vita has out of my view the best ‘social multiplayer experience’ as games focus on competing with friends and equal enemies in scores, which is a thing that I consider to be executed in a shockingly bad to not at all on mobiles although they would be the prime platform for this kind of experience.

Well thats a bummer but when I read the article it said so I thought we could use the android build.

Sony are tons of companies with same name… If they were an united group, they would’ve be just fine right now.
But one Sony don’t care about the other Sony, get it? So, the Sony that makes games are in some serious problems nowadays.

There is some PSvita games made using Unity ( for example Escape Plan have the Unity Logo ), but i have no idea how they port it.

I know the Vita’s bombing but it’s a real shame, for me it’s the most interesting of all the mobile devices. Hard buttons and front/back touchscreen etc…it would cause a rethink on gaming input, and thus gaming ideas in a similar manner that the Wii did.

I agree entirely. It’s by far my favorite piece of mobile gaming hardware, but unfortunately it’s not getting much pickup.

Its bombed because mobile world is moving at lightspeed. I tried out the Vita and at the time (more than 9 months ago - which is eons in mobile) impression was good, a large 5" qHD screen (which wasn’t all that impressive because of bad viewing angle and by now low-res screen) Quad-core ARM Cortex-A9, quad-core SGX543MP4+, 512 MB RAM, 128 MB VRAM makes it alright. But fast fordward to NOW and it looks dated already. By middle of next year, every mobile phone will have 5" 1080p screen, quad-core ARM Cortex-A15, quad-core PowerVR SGX543MP4 or Adreno 320 or PowerVR 6 Rogue, 2GB of RAM standard and cost half as much. Granted it does do physical buttons but and a gimmicky backplate touchpad but I honestly can’t think of why those features are important at all. Its like the touch screen vs keypad phone a few years back. Now you will be hard press to find keypad phone. Even Blackberry which insisted on making keypad phone are now switching to touch screen and they are still tanking.

Now. about Sony’s strategy in releasing the SDK - LOL. I will be 100 dollar this will be the downfall of PSP. They will be forced to kill off the PSP line soon. Think about it, basically PSP is now open to us average Joe who will invariably make .99c “garbage games” that so called “hard-core” gamers hate. It basically brings PSP down to the mobile phone level - and average consumer always side with cheaper (and also better) alternative which is mobile phone. PSP by next year will look so dated and irrelevent Sony will be force to kill it off.

Where do I write the cheque for 1500?

The 3DS is not going bad? not great but not a failure?

Your points are clearly invalid as it well, lets be honest beats the 3DS in every way but who the hell cares??? It is going shit because it has piece of shiz games… so yes give me the dam license(Not actually, I won’t buy another license till my game is done.)

I never mentioned the 3DS once. I think all the game consoles and handhelds are going to be (or already are) push aside by the mobile phone/tablet. There will be niche market for the consoles, and handhelds, but their market will diminish to the point it will be unprofitable for the makers to manufacturer them (since nobody wants to buy them).

Sooner or later Sony will be forced to integrate/merge their PSP line into their mobile phones as a “feature” only.
