Important posts in this forum – even pinned ones – are frequently derailed by long chains of irrelevant comments. Is there any reason why moderators are unable to delete or move such comments to other posts? Are there not enough moderators? Are the forum tools for moderators lacking?
Posts are so frequently derailed in Unity forums that they become nearly impossible to use for their intended purpose.
(For an example of what I’m talking about, see the derailing comments about the versioning of Entities 0.50 in some of the pinned posts here.)
Have you tried reporting the offending posts? That’s the best you can do when you are no moderator.
That’s one example. Can you name 3 more which require mods attention and “justify” your request?
And that “so many” people mess up the versions (fe write 0.5 when they mean 0.50) shows that something odd is happening. Other people feel the urge to correct them.
From one of t h o s e threads :
Maybe there would be less confusion if Unity would utilize another versioning scheme, maybe not. People are not perfect.
And this causes real issues for example with version sorting in the docs as explained further in that post. So the latest version is somewhere in between, instead of the top of the list.
I expected the forum to be about feedback. When something is confusing or illogial or “suboptimal” it should be able to be reported too. If you personally have no issue with this, fine. But as you see some people have. That’s (probably) no bad will. That’s just people coming from a wide range of backgrounds and experience levels. I thought Unity is “welcoming” all of them. Am I wrong?
On the other hand there are so many questions asked (for example about animation) in those “pinned threads” which are not answered at all. They clutter the thread too. Don’t you think?
Report helps or tag Hippocoder, he’s usually fast to move some posts.
The difference is that it’s fine to ask about the next milestones (Animation, Navigation, etc…) in a thread that is about the next milestones.
It’s not for some confusion of version numbers, Google results and some sorting in a dropdown list. It’s a valid concern, especially the sorting in the dropdown list but this belongs in another/new thread and not in the pinned DOTS threads.
We have seen this problem a few times now of derailing. It’s not cool. Learn how 2 forum.
Sometimes I create threads ( 1 , 2 ) on important breaking changes only for them to go unanswered. These two examples are really crucial to many DOTS users and are also reported in many forms in other threads. But Unity never answers them.
Then Unity developers appear active somewhere where they acutally answer questions regardless of their nature. Then everyone, including me, jump on the opportunity to maybe get answers.
Honestly the forums are becoming a mess because important matters are systematically ignored by Unity. You can see that they choose what to answer and what not to answer and that’s a shame.
I agree that the versioning thing is stupid and could be handled by a Unity developer saying: We chose this way of numbering for XYZ reasons and we won’t change that in the foreseeable future.
I totally agree with this specially about the versioning thing. This is like babies trying to get themselves heard. This is nowhere near anything like show stoppers for using the engine. Not ideal, maybe yes maybe not but if DOTS have the features it needs, nobody would complain even if it is versioned like v-5.2^3
And those kind of guys even complain here as well so moderators should really delete off-topic stuff
Thing is while I’m active in the DOTS forum (and have now switched to DOTS full time - HURRAH!) - I realise a lot of people are a bit passionate about the subject and have waited a while. Even so I think signal to noise ratio is important to all of us so do report them and I, or another will clean these posts up!
that last page(and a few posts near the bottom of the 2nd) from development milestones and status could probably be chopped off and spawned into a new thread.
I agree and it’s amazing how much stuff that I shovelled out. Perhaps we need an offtopic DOTS thread. I dumped all the OT posts in here DOTS OFFTOPIC DUMPING GROUND
Locked it and put some black and yellow stripe stickers around it just in case.
Pretty much nothing to do with an announcement and milestones!
Maybe it should remain open? Clearly there are misconceptions that people appear to have, one centralised thread to clear them up or at least be addressed by more knowledgeable people could be useful(at least I’m not seeing the downsides)
