Please fix the Asset Store - search, etc.

I know there are other threads out there saying the same thing but no recent ones (that I can find).

First I should say I LOVE Unity. I’ve been using it for a long time and it is by far the best overall tool I’ve yet found for game development. With that said, the Asset Store… the Asset Store. WTF??

  • Store searching is horrible. As someone who has spent, and plans to spend, a lot of money on add-ons, you’re making things really difficult. Since it’s almost impossible to find things, I end up holding off on purchases until I make fully sure that there isn’t some add-on I’m missing because of the bizarre way the store works.

  • Searching displays 99 items, that’s it. No more than that. If there are 500 items that fit the search term, don’t worry, it’s only going to show 99.

  • Because a search only shows 99 items, some items will naturally not show in the results. I was just looking for an RPG system and I know of ‘ORK’ already since it’s one of the very top rated RPG systems for Unity. When I searched for “rpg” did ‘ORK’ show up in the results? No, it did not. If I didn’t know about it already I would not find it through the search.

  • There is no way to categorize searches. Want to sort by rating, price, category, anything? Too damned bad. You need to browse every category to find something particular.

  • On that note, when I add an item to my wishlist, why does it take upwards of a minute for it to add?

  • And… when an item in my wishlist goes on sale, let me know!! You’re leaving money on the table here.

These things have been brought up time and time again. Is there anything going to be done about it, or is the store an after thought that doesn’t really matter to the big picture?

Also, there’s no way to buy assets for other people.

When people ask me what I want for birthdays and christmas, I know of about 50+ things I’d love to get on the store, but people have no way of looking at my wish list nor able to buy it for me.

I suspect it takes a long time to add a favorite for me because I have so damned many things favorited.

(BTW, I can’t find things in my favorites list. lol)

Unity asset store is an embarrassment.

Unity is always talking about how great the asset store is and how important it is… really?
Then prove it Unity!!

Maybe there’s not enough money in running the asset store to afford a complete rewrite.

Agree on all counts. Additionally, a better way to view recently added assets. The what’s new list is only a few items, as is the feed. Even if this was part of the search options.

Perhaps not. Surely it doesn’t need a full rewrite, though? A bit of TLC for what’s already there would hopefully do wonders.

If I remember correctly, Caitlyn or Aurore might have mentioned a couple of weeks ago that some updates were in the works. If so then hopefully they’d address most or all of these things.

I keep noticing that Unity is always being berated with requests to fix things ASAP and that threads asking “why is this taking so looong” for some random issue always pop up… but if you dig a little deeper, they’re working on it. Generally seems to be the case.

It would be nice if the search field would remember the text put in there even after the search,
same with my own downloads.

Hardly. The asset store represents a significant percentage of Unity’s total revenue.

What I’d really like to see is a responsive window in the editor. I really don’t like having to switch to a browser to do all of my searching, then switch back and wait forever to do the actual down load. And managing owned assets is also painful.

I don’t doubt that they are working on it, but it’s hard to understand why something like the asset store didn’t have Ad-Hoc Querying from the get-go or at the very least shortly thereafter. I mean, it screams for that feature.

As someone who works on a system with over a hundred tables and millions of rows of data (which is not even a “large” database), some sort of ad-hoc querying should not be something that difficult to put into place (with the logical query restrictions for performance).

Glad to see you back!

I’ve seen a couple Unity staff members on the forums today, maybe they’ll hop on here and shed some light on the reasons for the way it currently is.

In fairness, they’ve been continuously improving the store since it was introduced and don’t show any signs of stopping that.

Where does this come from? Last we heard, it was paying for itself but not a lot more.

Thank you Teila! I’ve had a change of heart. Gamedev and I have decided not to break up.

That makes me very happy! Welcome back.

That surprises me, I thought the store would be a major source of income.

It probably would be if us greedy developers weren’t sucking away 70% of it.

I assumed asset store was one of the big earners for unity since they are basically giving pro away now. They have to be making money somewhere, which I assume isnt really pro sales, but im just speculating.

Theres also UnityAds… I assume thats another good source.
