Please help, I can't orbit with alt key anymore! -solved, TY

Hi, sorry to have to bug you all with this, but earlier I was working on something and I must have hit something on the keyboard while typing that disabled the Alt key from allowing me to orbit.

The editor reflects that I am holding Alt down, but when I try to rotate using both my wacom pen and mouse it doesn’t allow me to orbit around the selected object anymore.

I’ve been looking around the older threads, which makes me feel silly because everything else I’ve read seems to be of a more technical and complicated nature.

Would anyone happen to know how I can alleviate this? I’d very much appreciate it~

Heh, I had this problem recently too. It seems to only work when you’re focused on something. You have to press the F key while your mouse is over the viewport, with any object selected. Then alt will orbit the camera around the selected object.

Hi sybixsus2!

Thank you for taking your time out to help me.
I tried as you said on a couple of projects, but unfortunately the alt keying is still only serving as an additional pan tool. Thanks though~

Which mainly boils down to this:

“This happens to me, all the time. My solution is: hit the viewport gizmo (right upper corner), and chose a non-perspective view, then hit it again, and go back to perspective. voila.
Its getting slightly annoying to have to do this all the time, but thats the only solution I have so far.”

Thank you so much Don Gray! {and thanks TheFormand too]

That was a really big help!
I’ll probably never figure out the keyboard shortcut for it, but at least now I’ll know what to do when it inevitably happens again

Thanks again

yep… this is SUPER old, but there is a [lock] icon by the upper right corner near the gizmo. It’s light gray and a little hard to notice. Unlock it and you are good to go.

Sooooooooooooo yeh same happened to me and let me try to make it clearer. When you’re in your scene tab, look in the upper right corner where the XYZ axes is, and you’ll see the little light gray lock icon. Click the lock and it will unlock the ALT key. Took me forever to find this, and still no idea how I clicked it.

Maybe you are in the “2D” Mode? Click on “2S” in the toolbar!
