I’m Taki, and I’m writing to express my frustration with the website’s language redirection. I have my language settings set to English, but I keep getting redirected to the Simplified Chinese version of the website. This is causing me a lot of inconvenience.
I’m not sure what’s causing this issue, but I would appreciate it if you could look into it and fix it as soon as possible. It would be great if the website could respect my language settings and not redirect me to a different language version.
Thank you for your time and attention to this matter.
This is a quite common issue nowadays. I also don’t get that agressive language redirection of websites. Google does it, MSDN does it and many other sites as well. At least MSDN can be switched, even though it may just be temporarily. The same is often true for software. Why do developer think that an automatic choice is always the best option. I also prefer to have at least the option to select the language myself. I remember older games which even had separate options for audio language UI language and subtitle language.
Though I’m not sure if there’s an easy fix as it seems many webframeworks make this decision on their own, you know, for your convenience -.-
I disagree. When I switch to Japanese, Russian, or French, everything works fine.
However, when I switch to English, the webpage reverts to Chinese. I even tested it on a fully English operating system, and it still displayed “Simplified Chinese.”
It seems like this is a deliberate setting by the official website, forcing users in Taiwan to view “Simplified Chinese.”
However, Simplified Chinese and Traditional Chinese (used in Taiwan) are distinct languages.
They have different semantics, grammar, and idiomatic expressions.
More importantly, as a developer in Taiwan, using an English development environment is a prerequisite, both in academia and the workplace.
Therefore, I find this behavior truly disrespectful and inconvenient for everyone.
This is just my humble opinion.
Let me give you another example. The “Inspector window” is translated into Chinese as “偵測器”, but as developers in Taiwan, we find this translation completely unacceptable. We always refer to it by its English name (Inspector) , which is more accurate, authentic, and helpful when searching for information.
It’s nearly impossible to find the latest information using the Chinese translation.
I strongly urge the official team to reconsider this practice, as it creates an impression of political manipulation.
Maybe you misunderstood me Yes, the main issue is usually that english is often not an actual language choice but simply the default. When you are on the default they switch you to your system language which is just stupid. English should be a selectable language like every other language. It’s fine to have a non-specific language link which may automatically pick your system language (or the language you’ve choosen and that may be stored in a cookie). However there should be a way to have an actual english coded URL. This is usually the main problem. It also works for me when I enter
https://unity.com/fr
I get the frensh version. However when I enter https://unity.com/en
I get redirected to https://unity.com/
which is then immediately redirected to https://unity.com/de
since my system language is german.
This is the issue. You can not choose english as language as this is simply the default.
That’s why I feel like it’s taking away my choice.
The Unity Asset Store is even worse. We can’t use Simplified Chinese in Taiwan. We don’t have that input method and can’t type those characters, so we can’t even search. This stops us from using the English site, which feels unfair.
As a teacher, this is really frustrating! It makes it hard to teach and develop games.
In the video, you can see that when I try to switch to the English version, it immediately pulls me back to the Simplified Chinese version. However, switching to the Japanese version works perfectly fine.
At the end of the video, I even type the English URL directly into the browser, but it still redirects me to the Simplified Chinese language version.
BTW, to prevent the system from misjudging my language preference, I’ve already set my account and Chrome language preferences to English!
So first when I loaded the english version I get a temporary redirect (307) to the url that doesn’t have any language specified because they treat english as the default https://unity.com/releases/editor/archive
This in turn will trigger the automatic language choice and redirect with a “(302) Found” to your local language, in my case german. https://unity.com/de/releases/editor/archive
That is the issue. I can not load the english version of that website, at all. This issue only exists for the english version. What those systems should do is keeping the redirect from the language agnostic link to your local language but they should not redirect the english URL to the language agnostic version. That just makes no sense.
Hey, tbh I dont think you’re being too over sensitive. Companies constantly seem to forget they are global
While I am an english speaker, my companies proxy server is in holland, I dont speak dutch but it means every frigging website defaults to dutch… yet nothing about my PC says I am, cos, clearly, im not. The language my PC says i undersand is absolutely only english.
Extending it further, how many companies mail you about “free post” or whatever - but only for america, when they have my email ending in .co.uk, and my full address as ive bought stuff clearly stating england… so you get all excited cos maybe their postage was horrendous due to being overseas, and then somewhere, possibly not even in the email you find that tiny print that says “only for americans”…
If companies want to play the global game, they need to understand that not only are salutations mr, mrs, and dr, but also “miss” (thanks) and (Im against it but) Ms too, possibly more, but that if I speak only a language, that irrelevant of where im currently sitting, or whatever else you use to default me to a local language, which i have no issue of, I should easily find a way to convert your site to a language I speak, and it shouldnt have to be done repeatedly, and it needs to be complete, even if its ai translated badly, its better than a pile of words i dont know.
Thank you for your feedback. I’m surprised and pleased that my first discussion on the Unity forum has generated so much attention.
I think the reason for my frustration is that this functionality used to be available, but now it’s not, which is disappointing.
Regarding language localization, I believe many websites have good intentions and receive positive user feedback.
However, due to cultural differences, many people internationally don’t realize that there are multiple forms of Chinese. Simplified and Traditional Chinese are distinct languages. I hope this misunderstanding, whether intentional or not, can be corrected soon.
Once again, I thank all Unity developers around the world. Let’s change the world together through games!
Geolocation redirects should be a fireable offence. If my browser is set to en-gb, I bloody well want the nearest dialect of English a site can muster. Never, ever assume a user’s language from where they are. NEWSFLASH FOR WEB DEVS: There is this thing called “travel”. People do it a lot. You may want to look into it.
