In the video recording of session “Facebook/Social Network Integration” from Unite’09. Benjamin touched upon the problem with requirement of plugin installation for the end user on Facebook but he not presented any numbers.
From my experience of using Shockwave on Facebook there are only 15-50% of the new coming users install plugin or have it installed already. And I interested what are these numbers for Unity plugin for Facebook audience. Could someone share info about that?
I think a lot of people think that facebook users are totally stupid and can’t do anything even remotely difficult like the very EASY installation of the Unity webplayer … and yet those very same users are using web browsers and going to site which, by comparison, are quite complicated, like facebook itself.
I think if you present the need for installation in a friendly way it should be easy for anyone to do.
it’s complicated but at least it’s not asking you to install something on their machine,
the problem is once you ask them to install something, most of them probably will freak out (especially with the amount of spy/adware out there).
But it is pretty dated. And I’m not sure what kind of audience is considered there. It is likely audience of a “standalone” browser-based MMO games and a casual game portals.
I also found comment to another blog post:
May be Unity team members know some examples of this kind successful stories?
