I’m new to Unity and am working on a project that I’m hoping to start pulling together within 2017. But I had a question pop up in my head while planning. I know the assumed poly count in Unity is supposed to be 3000 to 5000, but does that get measured per model, or object? Like if I had a body and detached head does each piece count as seperate pieces? I’m asking for machines and segmented bodies for selectable clothing.
I know there is some limit for poly’s per mesh, but I think its about 50k, I don’t believe there is any for the scene though. You should really only worry about performance on your targeted platform, as the limit is something that once you reach your performance will be terrible.

There isn’t polygon limit per mesh but there is a vertex limit per mesh. It’s a 16-bit limit or 65,535 vertices. If you need more than that you’ll need to subdivide the mesh into multiple meshes.
There isn’t an assumed polygon count. Use as many as you need to get the job done while maintaining performance.
