Hello,
My new asset got published recently. Then I received an email from a person called “Murakami Haruki” and he asked for a voucher code. He said he will offer feedback on his experience using the asset. But he didn’t.
His email address is : steamcommunitymurakamiharuki[at]gmail[dot]com
He will most probably try this trick on other new published assets as well.
So, be aware of him.
[UPDATE]
Please check my latest post as he finally did give me the feedback: Possible Voucher Scam - Community Showcases - Unity Discussions
I mean, I would be honoured to be scammed by one of my favourite Japanese novelists.
I am glad I found this. I just got the same email today, asking for voucher and was wondering if it isn’t some scam.
Thank you for making this thread, you saved me a voucher. ![]()
I should inform @vincurekf and the others that surprisingly he did give me the feedback after more than 30 days. Here is his Unity profile: https://assetstore.unity.com/users/7971980921329
As I didn’t hear back from him for such a long time and considering his name and the structure of his mail, I got to believe that he is a scammer.
It’s up to you whether to trust him or not.
Almost 2 years later and they are still going. I received an identical email today and I find it hard to believe they can’t buy my under $10 asset when they are leaving multiple reviews every day on expensive assets that they didn’t get gifted.
I received the exact same email today:
steamcommunity.murakami.haruki@gmail.com
The person claimed to be a middle school student and even sent a short gameplay video of their “project.”
It seemed cute and sincere at first, so I even went ahead and generated a voucher code. But just before sending it, my gut feeling kicked in, and I asked if they could verify that they’re actually a student.
Suddenly, they backed off, said they couldn’t share any personal information, and withdrew their request. Then they disappeared.
Fortunately, I didn’t send the voucher.
Looking back, the email address is extremely suspicious.
It’s clearly designed to bypass Google searches by combining common, trusted keywords. People unfamiliar with the context might assume the sender is Japanese, but after digging into several clues, I strongly suspect they’re actually Chinese.
It appears they’re automatically mass-emailing newly released assets, and likely using GPT to generate responses. The stolen voucher codes are being resold inside China on secondhand marketplaces.
Never, ever give out a voucher code under any circumstance without proper verification.
This is written by a pissed-off developer in South Korea, awake at 2:40 AM, after getting that same email.
한국분들도 속지마십쇼 걍 사기입니다 바우처 요청은
I was surprised to find this thread, I just had a similar email from the same address. The formatting used on the name of my unity asset was different from the rest of the email, the whole thing felt strange.
I’ve had three different requests for vouchers now, politely declined them all. Interesting to learn there are asset store voucher scams.
I have just implemented a pretty clear cut contact policy. In future I will just refer emails like this to this page. Ignoring the emails completely invites further attempts.
Any other new asset store developers might want to consider this, I’d advise against entertaining voucher requests
