I use Maya to model maps. I use ZBrush and CrazyBump for the normals. For textures I go to CGTextures.com.
But if you are making a building, would you put the texture map of the entire building into one big texture, or would you split it up? Also, if you wanted to make one wall look the same as another, can you tile textures in maya like you can in unity? Thanks.
Depends. If you want textures to tile
A: You tile on the UV. The disadvantage with this however is you need a stock texture, something that will keep repeating.
B: You tile the parts that need repeating textures. Create a building out of 5x meter walls for example. This allows you to have all the textures needed for a building on the same file.
If you’ve never done any modeling before you’re likely getting ahead of yourself. Modeling is an art, and any art is something you learn by doing. Blender is a modeling tool that’s free, gobs of tutorials and provides more than most people need.
I usually model certain pieces of a building that could be repeated. I then duplicate those pieces, each with its own texture. the texture just needs to tile. I have a lot of those pieces creating a finished building/map.
