Previously-placed detail meshes disappear as I add new ones...max limit?

Hi all-

I’m attempting to paint detail meshes and grass into my scene, however can’t get enough of 'em. I’ve noticed (much to late) that there seems to be a limit to how many can be placed- which I can understand, but it gets weirder.

My last attempt was using a low opacity brush and low target strength, I manged to get about 30 detail meshes placed before it started erasing old ones as placing new! Now that can’t be the limit- I’ve placed more before…but it really adds to the confusion. I have a rather large Island, though nothing larger than the Unity demo from 2.X. I’d really like it to be lush and green, this is a big issue :frowning:

Has anyone seen this before? Not finding mention of it elsewhere…

thanks!

New info- just noticed that I cannot paint back into areas that have disappeared…this is definitely a glitch…?

It’s not deleting them, it’s just not displaying them. That explains why you can’t re-paint the invisible ones, because they’re already there but for some reason your client isn’t displaying more than 30(?) at a time.

Check the quality settings on your terrain object, or try running the game at a higher quality setting just to see what happens. Try the “Terrain” menu and then “Refresh tree and detail prototypes”. Are you sure you’re not painting these as trees by mistake, or have some kind of issue (such as broken or high-poly geometry or UVs) with the detail objects that you’re painting? How many textures are on this terrain, and what are the settings in the Terrain → Set Resolution menu, especially for the detail texturing.

There is a slider in the terrain quality options that determines how far away these objects are visible, but I’m not aware of a way that you can set a hard limit on the number visible at once. This might turn out to be something simple, but I don’t have much experience with Unity’s terrain system compared to the ones in other engines.

hi xomg-

thanks for the info. Actually, I think it may have been a bug, somehow- it definitely wasn’t creating them, as they didn’t’ show up in the game either.

I updated to 3.1 yesterday, and BAM i can place all i like suddenly. hooray!

I am having the exact issue that was described at the beginning. Especially annoying is the inability to paint back over an area things have disappeared from. I’m using unity 4.3.4 so I cant imagine what causes this problem or how it could last through all these versions of unity. They aren’t invisible, they genuinely are not there any longer. Has anyone figured this out in recent years?
