I have been working on a project in Unity for the past month or so now, and until recently it went smoothly. Now, whenever I open Unity, a few things happen seemingly randomly.
Most commonly the splash screen will do it’s thing and load, then open the editor window however it’s fully blank minus the window name on top. I can actually click where the file, edit, etc. buttons are and it opens a blank menu. Other times but less often it’ll open to my scene but be completely frozen, cannot use any buttons or click anything.
I have tried so many things and I’ve been dealing with it for days. I really wanted to refrain from making this post because there are so many already out, but none of the solutions work for me.
I have tried:
Restarting computer
Reinstalling Unity Hub, editor, and different editor versions
Updating graphics drivers (nvidia)
Deleting the folders in the Roaming/Local/LocalLow folders. This was a solution on many posts.
Pray & cry
What I haven’t tried:
Contacting support
Rolling back graphics drivers (didn’t update them before Unity broke)
Accepting defeat.
Please offer any sort of advice, I will try anything at this point.
PC Specs in case it matters:
Intel Core i7-12700k
32gb ram
nvidia rtx 3080.
Try turning off your internet, and opening it while your internet is completely disconnected. If that doesn’t work, if you have any VPN or Antivirus, try completely disabling them, and then opening the editor. These have caused issues with blank sections of the editor, or parts of it not responding. Worth a quick mention since they are easy to check.
Make a copy of the project. Rip it apart. Check if it eventually goes back to normal. I’d start disabling editor scripts, then removing assets and packages that you need the least, and/or switch to a blank scene and start adding your project’s stuff to it piece by piece.
Thank you for your reply! I tried disconnecting internet and disabled Windows Defender and had no success. I appreciate the ideas though, I had not tried those yet.
I will try this next, however, even opening a new project yields the same results. I believe it is an editor issue or an issue with my system rather than my project. I will update this if it works though. Thank you for your reply and for the idea.
After spending hours cleaning my computer of all unnecessary programs, processes, files, etc, I found the issue. I had enabled ShadowPlay on my desktop. I turned it off, and it works perfectly. Just gotta fix my project now as I guess reinstalling the editor and hub a total of a dozen times, switching versions, safe mode, etc messed it up. I am gonna leave this thread up for anyone else that has this issue.
Hi guys,
Two days ago, I had a windows and nvidia update (GTX 1080). After that, I was unable to open Unity - getting this white screen problem.
After looking for a workaround for a day, I found out that reverting my nvidia drivers to version 536.99 fixed this issue.
Maybe a Unity dev should look into this problem as it forces us to keep our drivers not updated which is not recommended!
I have been using 537.42 for weeks without issues on a GTX 1070 and AMD Ryzen 9.
Be sure to use the Nvidia “Studio Driver”!
Avoid the “Game Ready” drivers since working with Unity falls under the “creative work” that Nvidia advertises as primary use for the Studio Driver, which provides a more stable and fully-featured version. Game Ready drivers instead have built-in “optimizations” or shortcuts that improve performance for games but may cause issues with creative tools that rely on the driver doing EXACTLY what it is asked to do, not what it thinks will provide the best performance.
Besides Unity, other game production software like 3D modeling, texturing, video editing, audio production, and more also benefit from using the Studio Drivers.
Would be nice if you could confirm whether installing the latest Studio Driver (currently: 537.58) fixes the issue for you. In that case we’d have a go-to solution for at least Nvidia users running into the “white screen” or “white icons” issue.
Hi @CodeSmile !
I did the test and unfortunately the issue is back even with the Studio Driver.
I suppose this is a more complicated issue Hope that Unity and Nvidia will find a workaround. Until then, I’ll stay with the 536.99
EDIT: Since I was going to do another round of tests, I tried to install every drivers from 536.99 to the most recent ones. The last drivers that still allows me to launch Unity without any issue is the 537.13. Hope it’ll help fixing this someday!
Just to let you know that I found out that the HDR option (Windows HD Color) was activated for one of my screen. That was the reason of the white screen bug for me, this seems to be broken since Nvidia drivers v537.13.
