Problems attaching animator controller to character

I’m having trouble attaching animations to my character controller.
When I drag a new animator controller onto the character it sinks into the ground in a crouched position before I’ve even added any animations in the animator window.

This is the scene screen before the game plays:

I just can’t work out what I’m doing wrong - I’m really stuck. Any help would be so much appreciated.

On your animator un-check the box which says apply root motion, the reason why it’s crouching is because the crouch animation is set as default in Mecanim. Either set your idle as default or in the start function of your script make sure the animator sets an the state/integer/what ever your using, to idle.
