So is there any update with this?
We have game on steam and we got few bug reports with game crash. Every single bug reporters has this GPU:
Intel(R) Iris(R) Xe Graphics
Game crashes only happens on this GPU, even worse integrated GPU doesn’t cause crashes. This is kinda weird. Is something wrong with this GPU and unity games?
i have this problum too. i can reproduse it consistently. step 1: download Shapez 2, step 2: make a big save (i would send mine but this place doesnt let me upload attachments) step 3: try and load the save, step 4: see the game crash
Crashing causes a popup to appear with the Shapez 2 logo and a red exclamation mark in the top left.
When crashing, sounds continue to play and buttons can still be pressed as if the game was running normally except the game does not render (you can use this to save after crashing). Alt-tabbing out of the game makes it impossible to go back though.
The game only crashes in this way when the player does something (like zooming out or clicking on a button). I’m assuming this is because that is when Unity loads a new scene.
The game usually doesn’t crash on the main menu, though I have had it happen once (out of like 50 total crashes)
When starting a new save, this crash does not happen often, but it does crash occasionally (my best guess is about 1-2 hours?).
As the save grows bigger, crashes happen more and more often, until eventually the game usually doesn’t make it past loading the save. Loading a backup can make the game run for just a bit longer but in my experience it almost never lasts more than 15 minutes. And I am still only about a bit past halfway through the game’s progression (I have just completed milestone 6 out of 9).
There is a thread about this crash on the Shapez 2 Discord: Discord
I am not a Shapez 2 developer though, so I don’t know any behind-the-scenes details about the game. I’m also not a unity developer, so my knowledge about unity is limited.
I only have experienced this crash in Shapez 2, but some of these points probably apply to other games as well.
If another Shapez 2 player would like to correct me on any of these points, feel free to do so. The crash might behave differently on different machines (though I hope that’s not the case).
I guess there’s a thin line between a crash and a freeze. The game does, however, properly crash after alt-tabbing out of the game, showing the popup in my second bullet point, with a loading bar. When that loading bar reaches the end, Shapez closes. I would definitely call that a crash. I’m guessing that popup attempts to send some sort of bug report either to unity or to the Shapez 2 devs.
I will note that, when loading my big save, Shapez does sometimes load the save but crash on the frame immediately after (or at least before I notice anything visually change but after the world gets rendered), or as soon as I either zoom in or out beyond the space/non-space threshold (the way the environment gets rendered changes). This doesn’t always happen though, and the game does quite often crash on the black screen before/during loading.
Also, the graphics API used does not matter. Shapez 2 offers DX11, DX12 and Vulkan but they all behave the same. And my drivers should be updated so that should not be affecting the crash.
