Procedural, or pre-built cityscape

Hi everyone,

Pretty new to Unity, but not new to graphics and procedural art in general. I’m looking to build a vast cityscape of small buildings (really just many low-poly shapes at a high density), and intuitively, I’m drawn towards doing this procedurally, but being in a fairly unfamiliar environment, I was curious on what other’s input might be. I would also be looking to create some kind of destructive effect for it, like some shader to make it look as if it’s disintegrating…

With a task like this, what are some of the pros and cons you see doing it procedurally, or doing it manually? Do you know of any resources that might send me towards this in a more specific way?

Thanks!

Depend, what are you looking for? complex city lay out, simple city lay out, just building rendering? Are building enterable? How much actual destruction you expect?

Simple lay out is as easy as making randomly subdivided shapes, if you want curve and lots with different lay out style that also follow the landscape there is: Procedural City Generation which is liek tree generation

Building can be made out of module, and have these module deleted and altered with shader, a bit like minecraft style voxel. If you don’t enter you can use interior shader to simulate teh inside. and have less mesh cost.

If you want local generation like perlin landscape, well that’s another level of difficulty conceptually, potentially possible.

I really like the city generation algorithm you linked to, I’ll have to look into that. I particularly like the curve and road layout…

My main inspiration for what I’m going for is in this image… I realize there are many more complex structures involved in this image, but for the most part I could approximate it with simple random shapes and flat shading.

Ah yeah, you wouldn’t need a layout, just the impression of city, which is just spawning a bunch of mesh very close together, lol. If destruction is at the same scale of the image and not precise 5i mean whole building blow up vs the windows is broken), you can just replace it by a particle effects and that’s enough.
