Process input during frame step?

Couldn’t find anything relevant to this issue anywhere, though it could be due to difficult search engine phrasing.

When using the step button in the Unity Editor, it seems impossible to process any input ingame. Are there any workarounds for this, or is it just an unsupported feature? It’d be hugely valuable in testing frame data, so I’d like to confirm it’s impossible within Unity before seeking third party alternatives.
