Ok, what programming language should I learn for unity. I need to learn it quick and I do not need to be an expert just enough to code elements of games in.
Unity uses Scripting languages not programming, scripting is alot easier and more fun.
I recommend Javascript though, it is simple (C# has WAY too much extra stuff needed) and most tutorials are written in javascript. But thats just my opinion.
No, Unity is programming. Scripting implies limited, high-level-only access to certain engine features, whereas in Unity you can program almost anything…parts of Unity are programmed in C#, such as the terrain system and the OnGUI system.
You are ‘programming’ when you turn on your light switch on the wall.
Eric, to me scripting also implies an interpreter rather than a compiler, sometimes tokenized sometimes not. Maybe all dot.net languages and java therefore qualify as scripting. Where are my pointers!
I vote you learn C#. Javascript doesn’t have preprocessor directives, and I find the C# compiler catches quite some bugs that would otherwise go unnoticed in Unityscript (Javascript) code. Take it from a guy who used to use Unityscript and transferred all his code to C#.
C# is far superior to JavaScript. Plus Visual Studio rocks. Plus it’s a bit more transferable to other applications in programming.
And yes, Unity is programming. Though it may depend on how you build your application as it may be heavily scripting (just filling in those Update/Start method blocks) or full fledged application programming (one entry point from a script, but everything else is full OOP independent of Unity’s architecture)
