Hello! I’m new the forums and I have been experimenting with Unity 3D for a few months. I am 16 years old, and I just love working on games. I have been programming games on other software since I was 11. I have in the past year created my own simple game engine to get a grip on how game engines work. I am now embracing Unity 3D because it returns the most for the least. Free! Hope to be an asset to the community soon!
Now to what this topic is supposed to be about.
I think I’m about ready for a project to work on, but I think the first project I better work on is a portfolio. Here are the key questions I would love to have answered, or discussed about.
What would you like to see on a programmers portfolio?
What alternatives can I do, to show my programming potential?
What are some example programming portfolios?
Any other comments would be great!
Thanks in advance,
ZettaGenius (For the possible trolls, I’m no genius.)
•What would you like to see on a programmers portfolio?
Well,in a programmer’s portofolio I would like to see his work(games he made, game engines, software).Put everything you programmed in your portofolio. If you made a game engine, put pictures, details about it.If you worked on a game…then put it there too.
Explain how the game works, what you did to make the game work(with or without pieces of code)…
•What alternatives can I do, to show my programming potential?
Showing what you have done so far, could make a pretty good portofolio.Make personal projects(game, whatever you like),or work as a programmer for somebody(free or paid),until you make a better portofolio.
Off-topic:Making a game engine at your age makes you a little Genius .
I’m almost the same age as you,and I’m interested of what books, sites did you use to learn programming. What programming languages do you know(you could include that in your portofolio)…or did someone teach you?
@Thunderent, Thanks for the input! I used the opengl, and directx sites to start my learning since I found it kind of confusing in the later. I then got into a few tutorials on basic programming with visual basic. It was a lot simpler, after I got a good handle on the game programming theory. I made a simple opengl game engine, that was really tough but I had it working on linux. (I lost the source, due to power spike) I started working with UDK and wasn’t impressed with the workflow, I bought the book Beginning Game Programming Third Edition, Jonathan S. Honbour. This helped me so much, and led me through making a basic DirectX engine. Feeling like I got a grip on how engines work I researched and found Unity 3D. That is pretty much where I am now, lets see where I go from here!
@iisjreg, Thanks for the input! I’m looking at it now!
