Programming Languages

Just want to see what you all think about the many programming languages out there.

In my opinion, the best programming language is Mathematica Script. All three oriented, and really obvious. Only problem is the programs it spits out take a PHD to comprehend…

Aside from that, Python wins.

If your language of choice isn’t listed, PM me and I’ll add it to the poll.

Hoping this will generate a lot of constructive discussion about all the coding options out there.

:!::!::!::!::!::!::!:

So what are you waiting for  :?:

Considering this is an Unity forum, it might be good to add some other CLR-supported languages like C#, Boo, F#, and Unity’s Javascript.

My personal fave so far is Groovy, but there ain’t a chance of that being supported in .Net (yeah, I know, I’ve got the sources so I can go do it myself, but there are other things I find more interesting than a language port).

You forgot to include C#?

You should add a “not partial” choice for those of us who don’t have a favorite.

Anyways, languages I like.

C - Good for embedded programming (robotics)
C++ - I don’t exactly like it, but it gives me job.
Objective-C - Simplicity is bliss. What I wish I could use instead of C++ (plus maybe operator overloading).
C# - It’d be my go to language if it could be compiled to native code like any of the above three.

Languages I know, but not well enough to judge
Python, Lua, Javascript (real JS), Squirrel, Boo, OCaml.

Languages I don’t know, but want to learn
Ruby, Scheme, F#, Haskell, Falcon, D, Liskell, Nemerle.

I picked Python, though i don’t know it very well, but i find it really a great language, intuitive and powerful.
I’d like to learn C# also but i don’t have time.
Envy to coding people!

Java and C#

Absolutely hate python syntax

I agree about python…at first I thought the indentation scheme was a really cool idea, but as I used it found it to be the source of really hard to spot bugs.

That does sound interesting but I’ll stick with curly braces.

And isn’t this already being discussed, in at least a related way, in this thread? It’s not an exact 1-for-1 match but still…

Get use to it :-P. On every forum I’ve ever frequented, this exact thread pops up every couple months… Same with other sites like reddit (actually, there’s one going on right now - Reddit - Dive into anything and even some graphed all the data: http://codeeleven.blogspot.com/2009/01/graphing-reddit-language-trends.html )… I think they’re impossible to prevent.

Dude, this is not the first forum I’ve ever been on so let’s not treat me like a noob, m’kay? :stuck_out_tongue:

Yes, this happens. Yes, this continues to happen. That doesn’t mean we/I should stop pointing out existing related threads. I posed it as a question and avoided assuming anything in an effort to allow the OP to explain if/why this is different than the other thread.

Uhm… Sorry folks, I’m realizing too late that you can’t edit polls after they’ve been started. Could this feature possibly be incorporated in the Forum in the future?

HiggyB: Yeah, but this is a little different. This is overall favorite, not Unity favorite.

For future reference though, let’s not just vote, but give a reason.

Sorry about that, I didn’t mean to come across that way. I meant it to be more like “we’ve all seen these threads before…” I apologize

Fair enough I suppose.

No worries.

I would say that RPG IV is my favorite language. Especially after IBM was nice enough to expose all sorts of Unix api goodies.

there is an F# now?

I think F# was first released in 2005
