Project Spikes / 5 Lives - A physics platform game

I’ve been working on this game for about a month and a half now, adding loads of features in weekly updates, and it would be wonderful for people to try it out and perhaps give feedback about what works and what doesn’t. You can read my blog for detailed information every week about updates and new features: http://danielthenerdyguy.wordpress.com/

The game consists of a series of levels, each with different challenges and obstacles you must overcome. Some are simply jumping puzzles, while others require moving objects using the Force Gun to forge a path through the level. The aim is simply to get to the end without losing all 5 of your lives, and optionally grab the bonus yellow cube hidden in each level. Below are links to the game and various screenshots:

I hope you enjoy playing, and if you have any comments, ideas, problems or find any bugs, feel free to leave a comment!

Here is a playthrough video on the 26/10/13 Update that explains what the game is about.

The force gun is a nice idea, but you need to make puzzles that need it or there is no point!!!

Very fun! I played every level. I think it has potential.

At first I saw the screenshot and I thought it was pretty bland. As I progressed through the level, I found it to gradually open itself up and show it as a ‘rush’ game. It’s perfect for speedruns but as TheRaider said,

If you want to separate your game from others, maybe utilize the force-gun in a fast paced puzzle.
I managed to rush through the level.
Great job.

Thanks guys, it’s nice to see people enjoyed playing it

I’m currently designing a few levels that utilise the force gun more, which I’ll try to get finished by the weekend ready for an update. I’m also trying to make some levels larger than others to shake things up a bit, so perhaps the longer levels will have complex puzzles, while the short levels will be speed run / avoid death levels.

I think it’s fun but I’d find a bit more playable if I could look and crouch with the joystick. Currently you can only jump and move with it.

I’ve done another update for the game, including a far better tutorial, an options menu, as well as many other little tidbits. http://danielthenerdyguy.wordpress.com/2013/11/09/i-shall-teach-you-new-things-project-spikes-9-11-13-update/

Just a quick thing to say which I think will make this game so much more awesome: When you jump, increase the FOV. Test with that.

That’s not a bad idea Lemo76, I’ll experiment a bit with that and see what I come up with, hopefully it’ll be worthwhile

Player Crosshair so you can see where you land?
Illuminate the gun with a light?
Add greater lights to signs?
Run mode?
Clock?
Continue the pixel style to balls/guns?
Just some small ideas/fixes I’m bouncing to you, hope you don’t mind

Lemo76, I like you  they’re all great ideas, in particular I like the idea of adding a clock and having, say, timed levels or a speedrun mode. But since I’m quite limited with time I’ll probably try adding more lights/crosshairs etc first

Yeah, lighten some of the signs up, I found some where unnecessarily dark.
Nice work. How did you do the System Specs, by the way?

Good news: signs are now brighter, plus there’s two new guns. Bad news: so I can fix level 5 and generally improve stuff, the newest update will probably be next weekend instead (sorry :C) also, there’s a whole bunch of stuff Unity has for system specs: Unity - Scripting API: SystemInfo

Here’s the script I made for my options menu, if you’re interested:

This is a lot of fun. I feel like it could be a bit faster paced, but adding a timer might help with that. The switching platforms mechanic in level 5 was really cool.

I’ll add a timer at some point, plus I’m gonna redesign level 5 so it makes more sense (but I’ll keep the switching platforms), glad you enjoyed it

I’ve updated the game, and you can read about the changes in detail here: http://danielthenerdyguy.wordpress.com/2013/11/24/guns-lasers-and-powerups-project-spikes-241113-update/ and play it here: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/156650682/ProjectSpikes/WebPlayer/WebPlayer.html

This update includes two new guns, the Destruction gun and the Laser gun, various powerups, a few changes to the level geometry to make things run faster, amongst other small fixes and tweaks. I hope you have fun playing it

I’ve updated the game again, adding windows (which you can smash with the destruction gun or by shooting cubes at them with the force gun), a bit of a framerate improvement. World 1 Level 5 and World 2 Level 1 have both been improved too, so give them a go! Also, the Testing Area from last update now has a space theme.

Have fun!

This game is pretty fun. I’ll try to list some things that I liked and some that I didn’t.

Good stuff:

  • The difficulty flow is good imo, it is too easy at first, but it catches up. It has potential to have some really interesting levels(w1l5 is my favorite one for now).
  • The switching platforms and the “invisible” bridge to the golden cube are really cool.
  • I don’t know if it was intentional or not, but there are some places that, it is riskier, but you can take some “shortcuts”.

Suggestions:

  • In general the level design are fine, but there is almost no use for any weapon, as others also said. The force gun and shrink gun can be used to make so many cool puzzles.
-Idea for a gun: reflective gun/ or just a shield. It could reflect turret hits back to them or use it to reflect projectiles into an unreachable button.
-Some billboards are just too obvious. If you could pass that very same information with something funnier and less obvious would be and improvement I think.

In general, pretty nice stuff going on , I’ll definitely check the next updates.

Hey guys, sorry I’ve been so long with this update but I’ve had a lot of other work to do, I hope you enjoy playing!
