“A cross-sectional survey of more than 4,000 high-schoolers found that boys who regularly played video games were less likely to smoke or use marijuana, and somewhat more likely to get better grades – while the girl gamers were more prone to get into fights or carry weapons.”
You could argue that this just proves that “stupid” kids don’t play games, either because they’re from poorer families or are too busy stabbing people on the streets, not that games make you more intelligent. You could draw the same conclusions about kids who read, etc. Maybe kids who play games are more likely to lie about smoking or drug use.
honestly, what they talk bad about games, is complete bs. Unless the boy himself is retarded and should not be allowed to play.
For example, every single person here is actually here for one reason - to learn how to make games, and they knows they will never stop learning as the technology is improving. Is that bad? no! showing interest into learning, how bad is that?
Also why are we here? Maybe there’s someone who played a game recently and tough its alot of money in industry or just want to be a kool kid in a block, but those are comming and going.
So what brought us all here? Not the price of game, not the gameplay or good graphics ofc, it’s the will of knowledge, wanting to know, whats behind of what gets us entertained or sometimes addicted. This makes all the learning fun and actually addictive. Unlike in school where you are pushed without understanding where you gonna use that knowledge in your miserable life, so you study just for grades, and once school is over, its all gone. This way people isn’t just studying or pushing learning into the heads, no! This way people shows interest and is trying to understand, and once they understand, that’s how you learn, the rest is just coming up in front of you without even touching books or looking at tutorials, feels like you are continuing inventing the invented wheel, but making it different or better
All thanks to games!
and its not about only making games that helps develop intellect, it’s actually playing as well. Games makes people think! Not all of them ofc, some of them are made to milk the money, but thats not the point
Ye gods! I don’t know what’s worse? They thought to do it, they thought to print it, or some $ linked to it and I read it!!
they don’t report a control group
they note they can make no clear associations, predictive or otherwise
they draw conclusions … then tell you that they don’t have enough information, or reliable practices to draw conclusions
they printed this in some kind of pediatrics medical site (may the gaming gods protect us if this is a reputable site… or a popular Republican one!!!)
So, now I’ve read it… like many other things, I can’t just Un-read it …
You can take this article one of two ways:
it’s a completely unsupported, unscientific and blatant swag at creating controversy to cover up a study that had no value.
or
take it at face value, and for all the young men out there… the “dream girl” you’re looking for will be the next one to knock the living *$#@ out of you (before or after she stabs you)… Sadly, it is cruel irony, none of these young ladies will likely ever stumble upon the authors.
btw… it doesn’t strike you as odd, that in a self reported study, the statistics for females doesn’t reflect the industry averages (http://www.theesa.com/facts/gameplayer.asp), and these young ladies “self reported” carrying weapons and getting into fights… Most people (female or not) don’t fill out surveys implicating themselves. That’s either one interesting neighborhood, or one well worded questionnaire!
