PSA: iTunes Affiliate program

I’m just gearing up for the final push before my app is finished (not Unity based, so I won’t pimp it too much here), and I’m just getting stuck in with the marketing side of things.

For those that don’t know, you can get an extra 5% commission on top of your cut from the app sale if you register yourself as an iTunes Affiliate. It’s a pretty sweet deal, as you get the commission for any sales referred by your websites or emails.

Ok, so you may know that part, but for you non-US devs like me, there’s a catch. The program is sliced up by region. The US store is the most desirable one to be an affiliate of, as it’s where most sales will occur and has the full 5%, whereas Europe or Japan only net you 4%.

What’s more, the US program will auto-reject your application if you have a non-US address. I just finished an email exchange with a representative though, and they can fix this.

Anyway, I hope this helps someone make a little more coin on their apps!

I was vaguely considering a web-based infrastructure (you know, build a pile of tacky review sites like Fingergaming/slidetoplay) that would subtly do this

Of course, being in Aus, it would mean I’d need to build a front in the US to deal with this sort of thing… Its still not ridiculous, but its a huge investment of time for most likely only a small gain

5% of a $2 app isn’t… fantastic.

It’s not fantastic per-unit, but it does ease the pain somewhat of Apple’s 30% cut (since that’s where the commission comes out of). And you don’t need to build a US-based front to use them either - I’m based in Europe and I got my game’s promo site approved with a couple emails.

I’ve even tested them from my IP and all that happens for non-US users that click the links is they get passed off to the appropriate iTunes region and you don’t get the commission for them, so subbing the linkshare links for wherever you’d put a normal iTunes link doesn’t really limit you.

The idea for me isn’t to make loads from the links, it’s just to pick up the extra wherever I can if someone from the US buys through my links.
