I know that Escape Plan had been made in Unity, my question is, will the PSVita engine ever be available? (I don’t care about free or not)
Actually… you can develop for vita, just need to buy a Sony Developer license (and that’s not too expensive). and i do not understand your question
Pretty sure they mean exporting Unity builds to work on the PSVita.
Somewhat yes.
A Sony developer license isn’t that cheap and PSM is useless, so I was wondering about if the PSV exporter/compiler for Unity3d would ever be made available.
Even if it is you’d still need a Sony developer license anyway. Unity is just a development tool, it doesn’t somehow sidestep licensing requirements.
He’s asking about the Unity side of things, not the Sony side of things. From what I understand they (Sony) are trying to get some indies on board.
I don’t know why you’d bother, sales of the PSV have been absymal, several months after launch the PSP was outselling it. I think Sony sold like 4,000 units in November (which should have been their biggest month) in Japan, but they sold like 18,000 PSPs in Japan that month. On top of that, games sales for the device have been even worse, they still haven’t sold twice as many games for it as they have system bundles!
So not only are people not buying them, those that are aren’t even buying any extra games apart from what comes in the box. I think the only people getting PSVs are hardcore Sony fans who already sub in for that Playstation premium service that gets them some free games for it.
So yeah, If you’re an indie and you care about no starving it’s probably best to avoid the PSVita. ![]()
At the very least, I doubt Unity would put in the time/effort to get unity building straight to the device unless Sony paid them to add that to the engine.
I agree, though I haven’t checked your numbers. I just think some people above weren’t answering the question, which is still the case.
If this is the level you’re at right now I wouldn’t worry about the PS Vita or any other console at the moment. Just have fun learning to make games for now and think about this sort of stuff several years from now.
As had been said many times before, if you have to ask this sort of question on a forum about what it takes to get on a console you most likely aren’t anywhere near ready for that market.
Well, the PSVita just isn’t selling because it doesn’t have too many games, otherwise it is quite a powerful device and has potential. Problem is, people don’t know/aren’t willing to understand the device. Most people actually think that it is just a PSP with a touchscreen, which is quite wrong. I believe that eventually Sony will fix things up.
Apparently, this year is supposed to be the golden year of the Vita because there are many AAA titles in production, and then there is the rumored PS2 emulator for it. The Vita had a bad start but that doesn’t necessarily mean that it will have a bad future ![]()
Also, I don’t care about selling games and stuff but just for fun, like how there is homebrew for the PSP. I just develop for fun right now.
I am used to programming (which might be the reason this question came to my mind), I have done PSP programming (not games but apps) so I have some experience with consoles.
BTW, I didn’t ask what it takes to get on a console but IF Unity planned to support the Vita considering that they probably have ported Unity3d for Escape Plan.
Unfortunately it’s a chicken-egg scenario. Nobody will make games for it if nobody is buying games, but nobody will buy one in the first place if there’s not a good selection of games for it. If Cameron’s right that even people who’ve bought it aren’t picking up games, that doesn’t bode well either. (But I wonder if the download games are included in attach rate calculations?)
I bought one soon after release and have got about half a dozen games for it, but am disappointed at the very small number of titles which use it creatively. Most games are ports / HD versions of games from other platforms. And it is a shame, because as a platform it has huge potential. I really want to make games for it just because of the sheer wealth of stuff you could do with that thing…
It did take on a huge challenge at a very difficult time in the mobile market, though. Most people who’d be into mobile gaming will already have a phone that’s perfectly capable of playing games, so all it could ever have been is “a better mouse trap” in a saturated market in that regard. (To be honest, I never bought my own as a portable.) There’s plenty of mobile games being developed, but few of them are designed with the Vita’s strengths in mind so up-porting them wouldn’t be particularly valuable. Down-porting games form more powerful platforms means that people are just paying more to play a worse-looking version of a game that’s already available to them, so unless portability is important (and they don’t have a phone…) that’s not too valuable either. So it really needs single-platform games which are designed specifically for it… there’s just not enough of them, and developers targeting mobile markets right now will pick platforms with bigger user bases. And that’s not even considering the “99c” mentality taken towards mobile games these days, despite the fact that Vita users are generally looking for a different experience than a game available for 99c can generally give. (Even I don’t want to pay $50+ for the vast majority of Vita games.)
Edit: The Wii-U is pretty exciting. As far as I’m aware it does everything I thought was cool about the Vita, but also has a big screen and I hear that there’s going to be direct support from Unity (which the press releases insinuated might perhaps be something more indie friendly than usual).
