Publishing games with cracked Unity. Will Unity hunt them down?

Moo.

Are you… Asking for a friend?

I just stumbled across a facebook group with 25k or so members many from the middle east and stuff talking about cracked Unity and stuff. I’m just curious if Unity takes active action to find and send cease and desist orders and even taking actions against the legal entity of the cracked Unity license and stuff like that…

And ever since 5.4, man that “made with Unity personal edition” splash logo is absolutely horrendous.

Yes. They have teams of former special services that hunt down each and every person using a cracked version of Unity and breaks their computers with baseball bats or cricket bats, depending on where they are located. They drive around in black SUVs with tinted windows. So keep a close eye out your window and if you see a black SUV driving by, hurry and delete it! They also have a team of cyber warriors who find those the men with bats miss. They will isolate your IP address and flood it with spam and viruses. Good luck!

They’re finally taking it seriously I guess. I think they should invest in building a small army of Terminators for the job.

Not this again…

Hahaha. Thanks, btw, I will be deleting this thread in one hour. Oops, can you delete threads?

I think they know most of biggest piracy groups and forums as asset authors have made threads about the same several times.

But did Unity do anything about it? I’m curious what they will do specifically for game companies that obviously aren’t making much money… Of course, if it is a hit game and the company refuses to pay the license fee and Unity hunts them down. If Pokemon GO is using a cracked version and refuses to pay up, I can understand that. But is Unity strict about shutting everyone down, including the little guys?

The way I see it, they made the Free edition specifically for the small timers, although small, are still trying to earn some revenue to eventually pay for the pro licenses. But with that atrocious “Made with Unity Personal edition” logo, I feel it is an anti-marketing enforcement that will hinder revenues of little guys.

The reason I don’t like threads like these is because it sounds like someone asking for permission to pirate. “Would someone who does this get caught?” is a common way for timid would-be offenders to try and subtly (it’s not subtle, we all see through it) feel out what their chances are of getting busted.

Don’t pirate. If you can’t afford it, you don’t need it. A game engine is not bread or medicine.

What can they do? in the case of the assets I think the pirated stuff was hosted in countries that have no treaties with USA/EU. For released games made with cracked versions they would first have to know about it to even react. Feel free to report them.

Thanks for the replies guys. It helped me understand the root of my concern on why I asked this question. So i’d like to update this thread (seeing as I cannot find an option to delete my created threads??) into a suggestion.

I suggest Unity change the new logos which have the specific logo “Made with Unity Personal edition”, for the following reasons:

  1. It is an anti-marketing enforcement. It is openly declaring that it is a “small time” game before the game even starts. Would you make an In-App purchase for a game knowing it was made with the “Personal” edition?
  2. It is derogatory to the game developer. Why would any game developer want the player to know it was made using the Free edition??

I have a suggestion to how the splash should be done. I suggest it should be a layered logo, which the developer can place together with the Unity logo. I dont know if this has already been discussed and rejected, but it’s just an idea I just thought of.

You seem to be missing another very valid option… if you do not like the Made With Unity Personal Edition branding… then simply don’t use Unity. Unity is one of many different game dev tools. From this perspective does it even make any sense at all?

If you really like Unity more than all other game dev tools then just use it and stop worrying about the Personal Edition branding. Think of it as simply the price you are paying for not spending any money on the game engine itself.

We constantly see this argument (excuse), but I have yet to see any developer provide any evidence that potential customers were turned off from making purchases because of the Personal Edition splash screen.

Spoiler: They don’t care. If your game is shit, people will think it is shit regardless of what the splash screen says.

Anyway this splash screen is gone, isn’t it? It’s supposed to only state “Made with Unity” now.

They will obviously send a hitman to kill them and bring their bodies to Unity HQ were they will be boiled down into a soup that the Unity crew will feast upon the next morning! …Itellnolies ._o

Sigh.

You’re not in really in position to make those requests. Basically, the software belongs to unity, and they implement whatever policies they want. Becuase it is THEIR software. There could be no free version of unity, you know? The engine was in development in 10 years.

It is not derogatory to game developer. Players don’t care about one more splash screen as long as game is good. A garbage game without a splash screen is still garbage.

The splash screen is here to advertise the engine. Since you paid nothing and most likely whatever title you develop will not surpass $100k in revenue, that’s literally one of the simplest things they could’ve requested in exchange of giving you access to an engine that has been in development for several years.

Also, if you’re “asking for a friend”… publishing content made with pirated software means gamedev is not for you. A person that is trying to profit by using pirated software is essentially incapable of adhering to any contracts. So, they might not give a damn about ndas, contracts, etc - i.e. they would be untrustworthy.

So either adhere to eula and keep the splashscreen, or don’t use unity engine and switch to something else.

That’s what I thought too. I think maybe in latest version it is gone. Not sure.

In my 5.3.5 version it is still there. And in the beginning I didn’t care much for it either because I can see how it could cause confusion. However, I figure by now there are so many games out there people are used to seeing it and probably don’t even notice it much other than “ah another Unity game”. Besides if I really want to get rid of it I can always switch to something else.

Not yet. They stopped working on the “Made with Unity” splash screen when they decided to go with customizable splash screen. It should be out for 5.5.

It’s still there in 5.4 too. Took me some time but found the article where this is mentioned: https://blogs.unity3d.com/2016/06/16/evolution-of-our-products-and-pricing/
