Publishing to Consoles Worth it?

Hi everyone, I was wondering is it worth porting a game from unity to a console like the xbox 360 or ps3? From what I’ve heard the process sounds real painful and annoying like the indie dev has to pay to release a patch or they have to pay a lot of money in order to get a devkit.

You have to get a contract before anything. Console makers don’t just sell dev kits to anyone with money. You have to get a contract with them or one of their publishing partners and then you can get the dev kits. As for the costs of everything, it always comes down to the terms of your contract.

But to reiterate: forget all costs of the endeavor until you actually have a contract with either the console makers or one of their publishing partners. If you don’t have that contract, the money is irrelevant.

Even then - to get that contract (or the money), you’ll need to assure someone that you can make a game that is distributable on said consoles. So, get crackin’.

No, it is not

Unless you have the contract and the required money, then no.
If you have both and an excellent game, then quite possibly…

Well, considering they are the biggest markets, sure.

Of course the flip side is big cost/risk

i know this is kinda off topic, the easiest way i know to publish on consoles without all the red tape is use XNA

It’s possible to leverage Unity’s Union to have them publish your proven title to consoles and share the profit. It says they help port your games to new platforms (perhaps console also) and they take 30% I think.

20%. You might buy a Unity console license if you’re a company; it’s not really something an individual would do.

If you have something worth publishing to a console it’s a matter of don’t call us, we’ll call you; e.g. Rovio
