Quad with outline shader?

I am having issues using quads and the default outline shaders, i guess there is a reasonable explanation for this, but i cant seem to find it.

What i currently have done is basically added another material to my quads that is the “outline/border”, but i dont think this is the optimal way of doing it.

Do you guys have any advice on how can i add outline / border to my quads?
