Question about assets

I am working on a game concept and I am unsure of a few things.
My concept calls for assets like in Bastion, and the same camera angle. The difference is that I want to make the camera rotatable around the PC and therefore I know the ground and other environment elements need to be 3d.
As far as the ground is concerned my concept is to have the ground like in Bastion cube based. I know I am not after isometric tiles for this style of gameplay because of my camera movement. With that said what is the asset type I am looking for for the ground. Is it voxel, Polly, or am I just looking for 3d cubes that are styled and designed in 3d.
Gah if I could just understand this I could pick my ground assets then I could start building.
Thanks in advance.

I understand your dilemma. I suggest turning the problem around. You’ve established you need 3D assets and you have a particular style to the assets in mind. Search through the asset store for something that you CAN use and IS in your price range. Most likely you’re not going to find an exact match to your vision. Every game designer has to make compromises throughout a development cycle, it’s one of those intangible areas that is seldom given a thought as an indie. Team development is all about compromises and can be a friction point from day one.

If you must have something unique, and you have the talent make it. If you must have something unique, and you have the cash, post your request in the for hire forum here. Sometimes seeing something in the asset store changes your vision. Find something and move on, this won’t be your last hurdle, you’ll never complete your project by stoping at every obstacle to find a ‘perfect’ solution when you have many ‘that will do fine’ options.

The asset store is a funny creature. It is an incredible resource for a wide variety of asset types and styles. In fact wading through all the assets available can be an arduous task in it self. Even with filtering it’s easy to spend several hours on an asset quest, sometime coming up empty, sometimes going off on wild tangents. Despite the huge assortment available, most likely none will be exactly what you search for. Finding multiple assets packages that all match or complement each other compounds the issue. Sometimes assets can be priced out of range for your budget, leaving two choices, compromise your budget or compromise your choice in assets. Lastly, any asset available to you is available to others, which is yet another compromise that must be made.

Condense that down to ‘find something that you can live with and make your game!’…
