question about license

Hi:

I have Unity installed on 2 office computers via an Indie license.
However, I am considering moving that license to a pair of machines
at home for personal use and buying Pro for the office computers.
Please tell me what is involved in DE-activating the Indie at work
(and installing Pro “over the top of it”) and RE-activating the
Indie at home.

Sorry if this info is easily findable elsewhere. Perhaps “activate”
was the wrong word to use in my searches.

Thanks very much.

I would strongly advise to send an email for such questions to UT.

Dunno if you can deactivate easily, but they sure can help you with this.

You can, I think, always upgrade the license on the current machines to a Pro by using the Unity → Enter Serial Number … menu and choosing the reactivate option. I think this allows you to enter a new (i.e., Pro) serial number for the specific installs on the existing machines and simply use the former Indie licenses by downloading the install package again at home and using the Indie numbers there.

But this may need UT’s help as you can only activate a serial number so many times. They can reset tis for you given the circumstances if you ask. David H or Higgy B are the ones to ask I think.

I decided to answer my own questions since I have now been through
the exercise and someone else may eventually find the answers useful.

First, regarding the issue of installing Pro over an existing Indie:
It turns out that an installed Unity is both Indie and Pro and acts
accordingly based on the license you activate. So, I just started
up Unity, selected Unity->EnterSerialNumber, and entered the new
serial number for Pro. I indicated that I was on the Internet and
wanted to re-activate. When I started Unity afterwards, the
ProAssets, etc. were all there.

Second, regarding the issue of migrating one of my existing Indie
licenses to a different host:
I installed Indie trial on the new machine. Then, I sent email to
the folks at support@unity3d.com asking them to let me do the
migration. They replied that I could now move the license. So, I
logged in to the new machine, started Indie, selected
Unity->EnterSerialNumber, and entered the serial number that I had
used on the old machine. I indicated that I was doing an Internet
activation.
