Question about OS X install on a PC

Hi together!

I ask myselfe, it is possible to install OS X on a PC with Dual Core 3,2GHz with 2 GB Memory and 240 GB HardDisk and after install, is it possible to work with the Unity normal version + IPhone or i must buy a Apple iMac or whatever? Thanks for feedback!

Regards, Train

No its not possible.

If you would want to do it for Unity (normal), then you soon won’t need that anymore.
Unity 2.5 will have native Windows support

for iphone development you must in any case buy an Intel Mac with OSX 10.5.3 and higher.

Thanks dreamora for the fast answer.

Actually, it IS possible to install Mac OS X on PCs with certain hardware. I just don’t know if it’s legal or not

FYI, it’s illegal as per Apple’s End User License Agreements for their various OS versions. For example, from the latest 10.5 EULA:

“This License allows you to install, use and run one (1) copy of the Apple Software on a single Apple-labeled computer at a time.”

Note the “Apple-labeled” bit…

An just to note, Apple’s EULA violates german law as well.

There do exist several options for using OSX on a PC but you’re moving in an uncertain area.

The last one i heard of was:

Mac-Clones aus Deutschland | heise online

That’s one of the few ocasions where I like german law. Bundeling and license restrictions are handeled better over here, as an exception. OEM software can be sold without hardware and Licenses can be re-sold.

I’d still not use MacOS on a non Apple Hardware unless tested an released by Apple officially, despite maybe using it legally due to laws.
I wouldn’t want to take the risk of using an unstable system in a real production environment. It’s still an emulation - and as was said: despite maybe violating german law it still is a very uncertain area.

I went through all of these options myself and setteled for an iMac 24", 3.06GHz IntelDual. I’m abolutely happy with it and wouldn’t want to move back to the PC just because of lower hardware prices, any more.
I still like using PCs and also have Bootcamp installed but for working I find MacOS simply so much more fluent and relaxing than Windows

(No - I’m not getting paid by apple :stuck_out_tongue: )

hmm…ok…so i think it is better when i purchase a iMac G5. What a kind of GPU is ok? And i must have the IPhone too by the way.

An iMac G5 isn’t going to work if you want to do iPhone development. Get an iMac that was made sometime within the last 3 years.

As pointed out in my post above, you must have an Intel Mac and it must have OSX 10.5.3 or higher for iPhone development.
Both is a must, not optional. If you do not have OSX 10.5 or no intel mac, iphone development is not possible.

dreamora, in the last post i mean with GPU the Graphic Prozessor Unit inside. And by the way not only IPhone, i will both and after than, he must stong enough for composing with High-End samples too.

For iphone development any new apple will do it. Older Apple machines with GMA950 will not do it because you can not use occlusion culling with them (the culling is calculated by the cpu and requires features not present on those CPU to VGA adapters from intel)

Hmm… You’re talking about making a hackintosh.

A friend of mine recently made a powerful hackintosh, and hasn’t had any issues with it at all.

Just as a note about the legality. It is, technically, illegal. However, Apple doesn’t really care too much if you’re just one person making a hack for yourself, and not selling anything to make hacks. They only really care if you intend to make money selling hacks.

Just my two cents.

Ok yesterday i bought a MacBook with 2 GHz and 4 MB Memory and a Hard Disk with 120 GB. It is a GeForce 9400 m inside. In the next time i purchase the Unity3D normal Engine. Working with a Mac is very cool

Yup! I just bought myself that same machine, upgraded the RAM to 4GB myself and threw in a 500GB Western Digital Scorpio hard drive while I had the back open and it simply rocks. Runs Unity fine (and X-Plane at medium settings at 45fps). Just finished doing Dead Words on it (game #5). Highly recommended hardware indeed.

As soon as my tax refund comes in I’m hooking it up to a nice 22" monitor as well.

Hey Train, congrats on buying the Mac!

@DaveyJJ: Nice to hear that you working with a MacBook too. Ok your hard disk is mutch bigger than mine, but i think at the first time it is ok. By the way, you games looks nice. At the moment im looking for a german programmer, when i doesnt find a good partner, so i must look world wide.

@Martin Schultz: Thanks for the congratz g

And when you are interested, than you can see my project, what i do at the moment.

The movie is very old. The new version is with rain and more particle effects and real time shadow.
I hope i finde someone, that can handle this for IPhone!
