I used Terragen and made a nice heightmap, it’s very mountainous. I feel it will suit my purpose well, and I was in the process of making pathways through the hills. I added a texture to the entire terrain, one of the grass textures that comes with Unity. It was then that my FPS goes from 500 to around 20.
Is there something you should do to stop that? If I remove the texture it goes back up. If I make an entirely flat terrain and use the same texture my FPS is back to around 500. Are my only choices near flat textured terrain and untextured highly rough terrain? I am using a default size terrain.
How many textures in total are you using on your terrain?
such drops sounds like you use a high resolution heightmap (ie 2048 and larger) which isn’t a that smart idea at least not unless you are on a 9800GTX+
also if you want to add foliage to such a system, the previously named gpu becomes kind of a minimum, intels and 7600 and alike don’t stand a chance at all anymore with such massive amounts of data
@oblivion It will do it with just one texture and 0 foliage.
@dreamora: I don’t know what size I used, it was whatever the default was on terragen. I’m on a new HD now and would need to download it and see what the default is. Then again I never really was that smart =(
See what made me ask that, was before, when I used to use Unity’s terrain. Everything would be fine and dandy with it until I used more than four textures (small ones) to paint on the terrain, at which point it would begin to crawl slower and slower. I asked and was told I could have as many as I wanted, but the framerate seemed not to agree with that suggestion.
I don’t use Unity terrain anymore.
