Question on Alto's Adventure Mobile Game Lighting/Post Processing Effects

Hey,

In the Mobile game Alto’s Adventure you can see and tell he is using Vector Art for the game. What I want to know is if he actually creates the the “fog type” effect with the art or if it’s done with a Post Processing effect or lighting.

Here is a development blog from one of the developers:

In this image you can see the Sun Rising, from a prototype you can view it here in a web player, Experimenting with Unity - Harry Nesbitt.
However how do the vector images change in color? I’m assuming they are PNGs with a base color. What’s going on here?

In this image in the red section you can see a fog type area. Is this done by a simple gradient? Or is there other images used with opacity to achieve this effect?

More Examples:

Another Example for the background parallax. The colors are faded. Are they all different textures with gradients?

Is the background image a gradient or solid color manipulated by light?
Also are the leaves dropping the use of the particle system?

More examples of similar background effects but from Night In The Woods:

Sorry in advance if this is very simple stuff. I want to be sure on everything before moving forward on my art. Thanks! Are some of these effects done by some assets in the asset store?

Bump, I still have yet to get a response.

Did the developer not use 2D images but rather 3D models to achieve this effect? Here is the dev blog:

It’s likely reusable sprites with a shader using vertex colors for gradients. Possibly a color palette per environment, maybe depth has an influence on it as well.

Most likely - although with the small amount of leaves dropping in the example you provided this could also have been coded up to play random animated sprites (animations). Probably whichever ended up to be more optimized.

I bet you’d have better - more factual answers if you were to contact the developers directly, since the most you will get from here is educated, speculative responses.

Also worth checking if the team has presented at any conferences to showcase graphic implementation. GDC, PAX, Unity, etc.
