Questions about Unity

Hey guy,
I’m new to Unity and I have a few questions. The engine is really great. I enjoy doing stuff with it, because it’s easy too.

  • Is it possible to make open-world games with Unity?
  • Can I sell my games when I have the free version of Unity or did I need Unity Pro?
  • Can I use Motion Capture for cutscenes?

Thank you,
Marcel

  1. Yes. It wont be easy depending on size, but yes its possible.
  2. Yes. If you make 100k you are expected to buy pro.
  3. Not sure. Someone who knows animation better can probably answer

Thanks a lot!

What do you mean exactly with Motion Capture? If you’re asking if Unity supports it out of the box: No, Unity does not. But of course you CAN use motion capturing in your projects. With Kinect and Motion Builder, for example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i5PwBzYrC_I

With Motion Capture I mean that I can record cutscenes like in my case interrogations and stuff like that. Thanks for the link! It’s looking very good.

I’ve been working with Unity3D a couple of time and now I want to know what is the limit of the engine.

  • Big open-world? (without loading screens)
  • Any graphics limitation? So next-gen graphics possible?
  • What genres is possible with the game? (interactive movie, action etc.)

Do you guys maybe know games where Unity is on their limit? Would love to see this, to see what is possible.

Thanks,
Marcel

If you have to ask this, you’ll almost certainly reach your limit before Unity does.

The answer to all of your questions is “it depends.”

  1. Yes
  2. So you’re asking if a current gen piece of technology can bring the graphics of a next gen piece of technology to the table? No.
  3. If it can be programmed it can exist.

Have to agree with squared. Reading into the OP’s questions, I surmise he may be heading down a path that will be harmful in the end. However, I’d still like to answer the original questions… Yes, Unity can support open worlds, though it’s hard and expensive and may not be Unity’s best strength. Yes, you can sell games with Unity Free, up to $100K per year. Yes, you can use motion capture equipment and software and import the animations into Unity.

Good luck,
Gigi
