I am a student going into the EAE Computer Science bachelor at the U of U, which is to make video games or get into animation(I am going Video Game Route).
I read some good stuff about Unity, and have all the details figured out. Even though I plan to make PS3 and 360 games, I am really interested in building Android Apps(and iOS(once I get a Mac))
The only thing I wanted to double check is if I get the Student Edition Unity like the Pro Pack with Android for $200, if I built an Android game at my house with the software for knowledge/experience, would I be entitled to publish my games onto the Android Market(and other markets), to the extent of it making money off the price tag or advertising??
I know with adobes discount, they allow it, but i didn’t want to just assume they did to.
I also wanted to double check, the $200 price tag on Unity Pro and Android, it says Annual Subscription. So i assume they mean I am paying $200 for 365 days use, and in that many days I will need to pay another $200 to continue to use it?
There is no “Student” edition. There are two versions: Unity, and Unity Pro, that’s (basically) it.
To use Unity to make Android/iOS games, you simply add an Android/iOS license on top of the version ($400 each at this time of writing for the basic version, more for their Pro versions)
You are entitled to publish your games on both Unity and Unity Pro. However if your turn over in the last fiscal year exceeds $100,000 then you are required to purchase Unity Pro to keep using/selling the engine/your game (If you have $100k then obviously paying $1.5k means nothing)
I have no idea where you’re getting “Annual Subscription” from. Unity does not charge anything annually or recurringly. You simply purchase whatever you want once, and you have it with your forever (Though it may not carry over to new versions)
Unity do actually have student licenses available now from studica. http://www.studica.com/unity so I think it is now possible to have an educational license if you are a student.
Before buying write down what kind of games do you want to develop. Unity is still not AAA engine and there are quite big troubles to develop some kind of games.
XBox Live is out of scale likely, it costs several ten thousand USD per title already on the unity end and before you can even license it you must be a licensed XBox developer with MS
