First off, apologies if I’ve posted this to the wrong forum. I was hovering between android, technical and this one. But it’s really a question about all mobile platforms (not just android) and it’s more of a generic question than a technical problem.
Fantastic work on Unity 4. Mekanim and the navmeshes alone are quite breathtaking. I’m somewhat confused about the license comparison unfortunately. In order to get the mobile basic/pro addons I must have Unity (desktop) pro, that much I’ve figured out. I just need some confirmation on specifics.
Are navmeshes entirely disabled on android/ios basic or are just features of them disabled (i.e. dynamic obstacles and priority)?
It states that build size stripping is disabled on android basic (which is fine, I used android basic with desktop 3.x pro before) but will that in any way prevent me from using the obb plugin in order to access the additional data hosting on google play?
The reason why I’m asking is that there’s an overlap between desktop pro vs mobile basic/pro in the feature comparison. The easiest one to reference is the “dark skin”, which I got with desktop pro 3x despite only having android/ios basic. Yet it’s specifically listed as a feature for android pro and not android basic.
Long story short; I’m just not sure what features belong with the pro desktop editor and which ones genuinely require the pro version of the mobile addon.
Darn, it appears I even got the fundamentals wrong. After talking to some very friendly chaps on the IRC channel it turns out my initial supposition that you needed desktop pro to use android/ios basic was flat out wrong. Anyone reading my initial post, please keep that in mind.
When you click the “Unity” button on the license comparison page (as opposed to android/ios/etc), does that only pertain to the PC/Mac/Linux builds and the additional features of pro does not -at all- influence any mobile addons?
Currently I have Unity 3.x pro and android 3.x basic. If I nab Unity 4 free, can I still upgrade my 3.x android basic plugin to 4.x android basic without upgrading desktop 3.x pro to desktop 4.x pro?
Many thanks for replying mate but that’s not what I meant with 4. I’ll bullet point this to make sure I don’t miss anything.
A. I have unity 3.x desktop pro with android+ios basic right now.
B. I want to use unity 4.x free.
C. I want to upgrade my 3.x android basic license to 4.x android basic license.
D. Whenever I attempt to upgrade only the android license in the store it automatically adds the 3.x desktop pro upgrade to the cart.
Been told that partial upgrades should be possible so I’m obviously doing something wrong. I thought that I might have to install 4.x free first so that serial gets added as an option to upgrade to, but it doesn’t appear like free adds a serial at all to your unity3d.com profile. I’m stumped.
You dont need Desktop Pro to buy Android/ios basic. “D. Whenever I attempt to upgrade only the android license in the store it automatically adds the 3.x desktop pro upgrade to the cart.” that should be correct as you’ve already paid for 3.x desktop pro so your license will still include that, you shouldnt be charged for it again.
The issue here is the difference between upgrades and purchasing it. I assumed that the android / ios addons were licenses, they are not. They count as expansions for a particular base license, be it desktop free or pro. Since I had bought 3.x desktop pro it wouldn’t let me upgrade android basic license to 4.x without also upgrading the 3.x desktop pro license to 4.x pro.
If I hadn’t bought 3.x desktop pro I would have been able to upgrade the 3.x android basic license to 4.x without having to upgrade the desktop component as well. While it’s not the end of the world I must admit that I’m a bit irked at having to pay $570 to upgrade something I don’t really need when the upgrade cost for just the android addon was $125. If I hadn’t given unity tech the money for 3.x desktop pro ($1500 at the time I believe) I wouldn’t have had to pay these $570 either.
Now, I could have abandoned my 3.x pro license entirely, but then I would have had to buy new 4.x android and ios basic licenses for 4.x free totalling $800. Irksome, but no matter. Doubt I could have lived without the profiler in the long run anyway.
What I can’t find anywhere is information about upgrade paths for addons. If I, for example, purchase Android Basic ($400) and then later decide to buy Android Pro ($1500) would I then have to pay the full $1500? … or do you get a discounted upgrade path rate?
