Questions - Thinking of buying Unity.

Hi , im ProGamer im new i have a few questions about Unity.

  1. What kind of game can i make. ?

  2. Can i make a modern FPS game like Call Of Duty and make buildings smash up. ?

  3. Is this engine Professional. ?

  4. What kind of code dose the engine except i only know C++ ( Still Learning )

Thanks.

Anything.

Yes.

Yes.

Javascript (sort of; it’s a version unique to Unity), C#, and Boo.

Thanks but im panicing of number 4 now cant it be done in C++ cause i have took a $300 course on learning C++

No C++, which would not be a good language for scripting anyway. Don’t worry about wasting $300; the important thing is knowing how to program, not which language you’re using. If you know how to program, then you can pick up any of the 3 languages in Unity pretty easily.

good point yes  im really exsited buying the engine.

so i can make a mordern war FPS game. But could i make it so at the end of the game the player has to disarm a bomb and he has a time if he dose not disarm the bomb a nuclear bomb gose of?

also when i download unity its a DMG file what dose that mean?

See Eric’s previous response:

You can make pretty much whatever you want with Unity, given enough time and effort. And as Unity evolves, it will surely become even easier to make even more awesome games.

A DMG is a Mac disk image file. I’m assuming you’re on Windows if you can’t open it. No Mac = no Unity, at least for the time being.

So your saying i need to buy the $1,499.00!?

No. Paying that means you can make Windows games. On a Mac. You need to buy a Mac, though, which might cost you more than that.

It onlys costs 80 pounds in UK

Or less…you can get decent used Macs that would work well with Unity for $500-$1000.

That’s an operating system. Not a computer. You can’t run OS X on a non-Apple computer.

oh so your saying i need to buy a computer iv only just bought one :frowning:

If you’ve just bought it, you can probably return it. Then you can get a nice Mac instead.

–Eric

If it can’t run Unity, it obviously wasn’t the right one to get! :frowning:

i cant its not from a proper shop like pcworld

how do i know it won’t run it? im just downloading a TMG file and it comes up with “Open With:” kind of file

Unity editor itself requires a Mac computer for the time being. Maybe you downloaded the file on Windows?

If you can’t return it (or resell it, or something), and can’t afford buying another machine, your options are basically limited to:

  1. Check the site periodically. A Windows version of the Unity editor is coming - someday - but it may very well be years. (Of course by that time you might be able to buy a Mac anyway!)

  2. Making your machine into a Hackintosh (e.g. installing OSX on it through some third party hacks.) The catch to doing this is that it’ll be completely unsupported (hackintoshes are not supported by Apple and are looked down on by most Mac users; the only people who will be willing and able to help you would likely be on the hackintosh-specific forums) and almost certainly very buggy, ESPECIALLY with Unity given how much Unity relies on things like precise control of graphics cards, etc. Depending on your exact hardware this might not even be an option anyway, as hacked OS X requires fairly specific parts.

(Also installing OS X on third party hardware violated the EULA).
