Quick 3D Game Art for Games - Dungeon Assets Tutorial Series

Hi there, I’m doing a new video tutorial series covering quick 3D Game Art using Maya LT and Photoshop. I’ll be releasing a new one every tuesday covering every asset needed to do a simple Dungeon Crawling game, starting with floor, walls, decoration assets, characters (including Rigging Animation) and weapons.

So far I’ve completed 2 tutorials, first one covering the Floor

And second one covering Modular Walls

Will do :slight_smile: I’m really happy with the positive feedback I’ve been receiving on it, if there’s anything you’d like to know more about just let me know and I might add it into the series. Next up will be Decoration Assets, then I’ll start on Characters (Characters will be divided into several videos since there’s a lot to cover, from Modeling to UV to Texturing to Rigging to Skinning to Animating…)

Right now I’m editing a Extended-Cut version of the Wall tutorial because some feedback I received was that it was too fast and hard to follow. Will do longer tutorials in the future I guess XD

Awesome content! One thing though, using Maya for modeling puts a lot of people in a handicap position since it’s expensive, why not try teaching a bit in something more accessible like Blender?

Excelent question! It’s a really simple answer though xD I simply don’t know blender, I can only teach what I know. I even tried to learn once, but it’s quite intimidating when you have proficiency in a tool to jump into other and everything you know how to do is different and suddently you’re a total newbie again.

However, Maya LT, the one I’m using, has a cool subscription plan that’s quite nice to Indies :slight_smile: It’s only $50 a month and it can be even subscribed on Steam. Or if you’re only making games as a hobby and you’re still a student, Autodesk offers maya for Free (can’t use for commercial products).

I think the tutorials will probably still help blender users, since most of this kind of art is in the UVing/Texturing, I don’t really spend that much time in Maya… The really complicated part for blender users to follow will be rigging D: rigging is probably waaaay different in blender.

Hey Daniel, I remember you mentioned on youtube you’d like to see what I make with your tutorials. Well, I thought I’d run this design by you before I start teaching myself maya?

What do you think? I like to think it could be accurately remade in low poly. That was the idea, anyways.

I’m a college student who’s currently building a portfolio toward’s concept art, and I graduate in december, so I’m building a portfolio for that. One day though I’d like to make my own game, which is why I’m on this forum being all curious about modelling and things. Either way, I think unity would be a good thing to learn how to at least make 2D assets for with photoshop. Thanks again for the tutorials!

What he’s doing can also be done in Blender if you know the basics of the program. For that I recommend this

Not sure about accurately, since it has a lot of curved shapes, and those usually require a bit of topology to look more curves/smoother. The C on the trigger could be a plane with an alpha texture, otherwise that would also take a bit of our polycount… It’s a nice concept, but not sure how accurate you can get keeping it under 1k tris XD

Thanks for your input! I’ll try and see how faithfully I can recreate it once I start the process of actually teaching myself maya. Until then, I’ve got other guns to design.

At 60 years of age, i am just starting to learn programming. I know its a bit late in life.
I found these tutorials whilst searching in google, for dungeon wall assets for Unity
as i loved a game called Dungeon Master on my Atari ST and Amiga. I am hoping
to recreate this classic game and your tutorial of buidling dungeon walls is going
to be a great help. So i would like to say a big thank you.
