Quick and Dumb question about Version Control

Is purchasing the Asset Server required if we are using our own Version Control System?

We’re not really clear about that over here.

Is SVN just an option for people who have the Asset Server activated? Or will the Pro version alone allow the use of SVN with all of its metadata files being created?[/b]

VCS is avaible to all owners of Unity Pro
Asset Server would add the unity asset server support (which I personally think is the strongest possible option when working with unity actually, at least unless you are forking out much more for a professional solution. SVN is nice as long as you basically work with plain text files but with assets it will bite you more sooner than later

Thanks!

We are trying to streamline our whole system overall, for multiple products and multiple engines.

Otherwise, I’d love to just use the Unity Asset server. It’s certainly easier for the artist.

As always try before you buy! Just drop an email to us at sales@unity3d.com, let them know what your current license is and they can set you up with one that’s the same but includes an asset server client license (best to do this for a few folks in order to test). Then if all goes well you can make the purchase.

Actually, the reason I had to ask the question in the first place is because we already have several licenses WITH the Asset Server.

We moved to SVN and we have to buy a few more licenses. IT just needed to know if we had to purchase the Asset Server in order to get the ability to have the metadata be generated for SVN.

For some reason, people in the IT Dept here really don’t like the Asset Server. The Art Dept really likes it. I’ve been told in no uncertain terms that my suggestions to go back to using the Asset Server are not being taken as an option.

I’m not really sure what’s happening on the back end that is causing this decision, but we have a lot of different products and we still use several different development environments. So that might have something to do with it.
