quick question about texture mapping

I am interested in how it works, more for simple objects like chairs and scenery related stuff.

I understand how to apply a texture to a shape, and I know that modelling of objects should be done in a tool like 3dsmax or maya or c4d or something else. But texture maps confuse me…

eg

How was that created? Is there an option in Maya/3ds etc to lay out a flat mesh and then you paint it in a graphics editor and then import it back into your 3d model? Is that how it is done?

Anyone know of a good texture mapping tutorial for 3dsmax/maya?

Thanks!

Yes, you make a foldout of your 3D mesh, called a UV layout. If you do a Google search for a tutorial on UV (or sometimes UVW) mapping in your 3D package of choice you should find tons of them.
