With the release of unity 3 coming by the end of the summer I am purchasing the pro version but only to make X-box/PS3 Titles…Sorry if this seems like a dumb question but here goes…
After making your game in unity 3 (After it comes out) How would you go about actually playing your game on the console. Because if i am not mistaken you require certain disks to play games on theses consoles…Or is it a data file on the disk that unity generates (Which i doubt highly) That the console reads and considers valid?
If it is the disk how do i obtain them and how much? i don’t mind spending if it is required.
If you got to the bottom than thanks for reading and i really hope you have an answer.
From asking similar questions I have come to realize a few things in this regards.
To get to the crux of the matter, i thought I had a handle on everything price wise and though the Unity PS3 license was going to be the only hindrance so I contacted unity for a price on the Unity Ps3 license (remember, pro alone is no good for console dev… You need a SEPARATE Unity PS3 license)… Anyways, after their support highlighted other things I hadn’t taken into account like $25k for localization costs etc etc etc, the value Unity sales gave me was in the region of $200k to $250k…
Buying the Unity 3 PS3 license, then buying the PS3 Minis License, then paying for the localization and the quality control etc etc etc… you are looking at around the $200k mark and to top it all off they did confirm that the Unity PS3 license is “per title” so it will cost you around $200k per game and that is with a Minis license… If you were to get a full PS3 license, that license costs more than the Minis license and you need a publisher before you can even hope to sell your game (possibly even get approval from Sony to get the license in the first place)…
If you want to get Unity just for PS3, be prepared to spend around $200k per title. As much as I want to do the same, I simply cannot afford to…
Currently Sony is selling the PS3 Dev kit for $2000 and $1500 for the Minis dev kit (PSP, basically). Sony is planning to make the Minis license free at some point but no idea when… However, the price of Unity PS3 (I can’t disclose how much as I am not sure if I am allowed to do so) alone is already way above my mantle place… but the other costs… it means the $1500 discount from Sony does not even make a ripple…
As you can see the WiiWare license is already $15k per title and that is on top of the teamwide unity pro license
also if it does not have 200k it will have a hard time even applying for a dev license as you don’t have anything like the required financial stability to be able to guarantee that you don’t do ruckus with the NDA information (or can be sued accordingly if you think of breaking them)
Well looks like I’m stuck with pc games for quite awhile…I already preordered unity 3 pro so i am set there…Too bad about the expensive licensing fees on consoles though.
Just to be clear: the cost of licensing our technology is quite less, definitely less than a six digit figure per title. And significantly less expensive than most other console development middleware.
You probably mean the cost of running a studio and console production expenses, including Sony’s SDK, which can (and often do) run into the hundreds of thousands of dollars-- but how you run your studio is your business.
