reading the width of a GUItexture

Is it possible to read the width of a gui texture?

tried something like this: guiTex.width…but that didnt work obviously

GUIElements such as GUITexture use their Transform for sizing and placement, just like other objects (though their Transforms are expressed in screen-space). So you can just take the x component of the scaling. Alternatively, use GetScreenRect().
