Real Data to Heightmap

What is the workflow for getting some kind of real topographical data into a heightmap form? Is that possible? I’m wanting to be able to generate terrains of real world locations that are relatively accurate.

Google Earth has a plug-in for this to extract heightmap data… I can’t remember the name of the plug-in at the moment, but it should be easy enough to find. It requires a PC though.

Well, it is a darn good thing I have a PC! Thanks.

its called google sketchup - if the terrain has a noticeable elevation change you can take a small area and convert that into an obj which can then be dragged into unity - there are some issues with normals and stuff though

No, I wasn’t thinking of SketchUp… it’s a plug-in that can extract RAW heightmap images that are compatible with Unity’s Terrain Engine.

Well there is this little piece of info from the US government.

http://seamless.usgs.gov/website/seamless/viewer.htm?startbottom=5.0&starttop=85.0&startleft=-170&startright=-60.0&limitbottom=-85.0&limittop=85.0&limitleft=-179.5&limitright=179.5

You can make it a black and white terrain map by playing with the options on the right. Screen print it and through it into Photoshop to create a height map. Then import the file as the height map in Unity.

It will start on the US, but has basic data for other countries as well.(not much though)

The google earth overlay is SRTM.

There is a reasonable explanation on how the to get hightmap data here

Not my work… just sharing something I found

Anybody get this to work?

I myself am having issue…

Another way of getting DEM data
