Real Quick Question (Bones/performance)

Just a quick question about performance…I’m still a noob, so this may seem like a very stupid question,
but hey…

I’m in the process of rigging my character, and am curious if the amount of bones has any effect on the performance in unity.

Thanks!

More bones = slower. Every additional thing a computer does takes processing power; nothing is free.

Thank you.

Now, is it a big deal? Should I ignore rigging most of my character’s face for the performance boost?

Another question: My character wears shorts…all the time…So, I’m not sure how I should rig him:

1.Make the leg bones move the entire leg including the shorts.

  1. Make the leg bones move just the leg and make the shorts a cloth or something.

(I’m thinking option 1 is better from a game stand point)

That depends on how many characters you have. If it’s just one or a few, it’s not going to matter that much (unless you have thousands of bones or something  ).

Alright, thanks!

I suppose I’ll do what I need to make smooth animations and optimize it later if it’s absolutely necessary.

I’m at about 60 bones without his face, so I think I’ll end up with ~75.

You should get a medal for answering so many of our questions btw ^^.

Someone told me that if I get to 10,000 posts here, I achieve ultimate enlightenment and become one with Unity. Or maybe I made that up…I can’t remember…
