I know it should do .fbx for animation but other than that I don’t now which one to get. I have viewed several demos of programs. Is there a thread that shows which ones work well with unity or should I just start threads and say, “How well does such and such work with unity?”
thank you.
programs I am thinking of and which must have the animation support that unity requires (don’t know if these have it):
blender
zbrush
lightwave (maybe an older version I can afford)
vue 8
wings 3d
make human
others welcome
I need it to do everything though not everything has to be perfect. for example, I want to sculpt items, props, people, etc. and build terrain but just because one excels at terrain but produces decent 3d heads doesn’t mean I have to have everything perfect. I can’t afford everything!
Blender is awesome, I highly recommend it. It has some basic sculpting tools, but if you need more advanced sculpting take the money you saved by using blender to get ZBrush.
Pretty much all those programs have a decent enough pipeline into Unity, the crutial part is what software can you be most productive in?
If you already have experiance in one package, that might trump other considerations.
If you’re planning to learn one in order to use Unity you have a long and bumpy road ahead of you, but you should probably pick the one you can get support with. (ie, friends who model/animate or easy access to learning resources) Failing that, read about them and pick the one that seems most in line with your philosophies. Realistically Unity doesn’t have much to do with what tool you should use.
If you’re going to dabble with this for a few months and give up, choose Blender, since it’s low cost.
