I have a solid build running at 60 FPS on a high end PC, in the editor when I hit play and watch the animated camera sequence everything looks smooth with relativly slow camera moves nothing fast. Even when I set the the FPS to 30 (by choosing “every second Vblank” in the quality options) the playback still looks perfectly smooth.
But when I record with Camtesia, the playback becomes choppy specially when outputting the final quicktime. Now, I optimized all that I can in Camtesia, so nothing could be going wrong there.
I tried everything and I am just out of ideas, there is something happening with the combination, as if Camtesia recording is affecting the Unity playback or something (not sure of that).
Am I missing anything? any ideas on how to fix this?
Use an actual build instead of the editor (build for Windows). Make sure you are using Camtasia 7+ which has better support for 3d. Try Fraps and if it does a better job use that.
same results with the windows build, using camtasia7, Fraps wont let you record to an uncompressed format, it always introduces a certain compression, and it doesn’t let you choose which format you want to render to.
You want to record uncompressed? Do you have an SSD?
not really just a WD VelociRaptor 10 000 rpm SATA hard drive.
Frame dropping occurs even with compressed format.
Just tried Fraps, the frame dropping issue is no more there, but Fraps seems to generate a compressed .avi format, can it generate an uncompressed .avi since it doesnt do quicktime?
Have you tried recording to a different drive than the drive you’re running your game, OS etc. from? And what FPS are you setting the recording software to?
I haven’t used Fraps, but my friend has, and it records at far better quality than I could ever imagine being needed for anything today. I think just a few minutes of video were in the gigabytes. Do you really need it totally uncompressed?
I only tried recording on my current hard drive, I really doubt recording on a another one would make any difference.
I am setting the recording fps at 30.
Fraps seems way better than Camtasia as it doesn’t drop frames while recording but it rendered only to 1 format and you have absolutely no control on output settings.
And yes I really need it uncompressed because I will render my final movie in Quicktime pro where i will be doing the final compression, and you really don’t want to compress the image twice.
Yeah I’m not sure if that’s your problem. But when recording, the drive is constantly writing massive amounts of video data to one spot and reading and writing data concerning your OS, game, and other software to other parts of the drive and this can slow things down with it having to move back and forth between those different spots on the platter. Also I’d try setting your recording software to 25fps.
