hi, yesterday i was attacked by a virus and lost all my fbx files, however when i load unity my scenery is still there with all the objects. ive managed to recover my original blender files thank god (because remaking all the characters and objects would have made me cry) but im wondering why unity still has access to my fbx files. when i import fbx files into unity are they actually copied and pasted into the unity file directory or does it just tell unity where to find that object. how do i get to them as i want to put them on a disk with my blender files so that i can completely reformat my pc. my actually unity scene file is less than 200KB so im guessing just putting that on a disk and reformatting my pc is going to cause me to lose my terrain and objects which i really want to avoid. any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you 
Go to your projects folder and they will be inside the Assets folder somewhere.
ive had a look through every folder and they’re no where to be seen, this is why i cant understand why unity is still able to load them. i think this virus may have just made them invisible instead of deleting them as the blender files i recovered were in my documents folder but i could only see them when i accessed my documents folder from inside blender. when i went to my documents from the desktop the folder they were in wasnt even visible. unfortunetly i cant reformat my computer until i find a way to get to them
Recover grab them using either any distro of linux boot/live cd/dvd, or you could try mini windows xp from hiren’s boot cd, but i would suggest for the first option as normally linux would ignore any NTFS file attribute that the virus given into the files/folders.
When you mount the partition, you could see all available partition in your disks and just plugin any flashdrive or portable hardisk to backup the projects files.
After you make such backup you could try to scan the pc with the following :
- Malwarebyte anti malware
- Emsisoft anti malware
- Hitman Pro - Internet access required as it’s a cloud scanner based on 4 anti virus engine
For trying to recover any broken windows’s services you could try kingsoft pc doctor, for free assisted virus cleaning you could go here.
If for some reason you cann’t boot to the windows or login to your account just use the dr web live cd for example, burn it and set the first boot priority as cd/dvd in your bios, and scan through it, but please attention because the various degree of virus infection, some clean up from the dr web cd will make your windows un-bootable, to fix this just use your windows install cd/dvd to repair your windows installation.
Among all of these options, i suggest if you really want to start from scratch your windows installation to really full format and re-install the windows after the backup of your projects, by these you are really sure you don’t have any virus left over.
thanks for the advice, in the end all i had to do was go to file options and change settings to show hidden folders, fortunetly it turned out to be one of the more pathetic virus’ and ive learned the lesson of backing up my files now so maybe it was even for the best
