Hey fellow community members!
This is a moment I’ve been waiting a long time for, super happy to finally be able to start this thread.
Back in 2011 I started a tiny project in Unity with two of my friends, we wanted to see if we were able to create a game for mobile. We all had other jobs and were divided with a 9 hours time difference in Stockholm and San Francisco, crappy conditions really, you might say.
There has been so much cool stuff to learn along the way. We built a level editor first but saw early we wouldn’t be capable to construct all levels so we made realtime algorithms run wild instead (I would actually have preferred building a robot tho). The project grew and in the end it almost started running us instead. A lot of time has been focused on learning and optimizing for mobile devices, a lot of iterations on graphics and audio also.
It’s our first game as a company, my first ever finished title as a programmer. We have a huge passion for the platform games from our childhood in the 80s and 90s which might shine through a bit.
So loads of nights/weekends later here’s the outcome:
It’s available for iPhone 3GS+ and iPad2+ for free, your feedback means a lot guys so feel absolutely free to get back to me with any problems or ideas!
Really happy you say that! Amongst the old school games like Donkey Kong Country, Ecco the Dolphin is one of the great inspirations. We really wanted to go back and touch SNES/Sega Megadrive, pickup the beloved games from our childhood. The music is greatly inspired by the kind of ambient feeling that was to Ecco, especially a couple of reefs in.
Thanks shaderbytes! We’re looking into that, we’d really like to be available to Android as well. Not sure yet whether to hook up with an outsourcing company or to walk the long mile and do it in-house. Someone with any previous experience who could throw in a couple of tips would be much appreciated!
I realize the topic should have been Reef Run - if you hate fish, you kinda get a chance to vaporize an entire ocean.
I just think that some of the GUI graphics, especially, the main title, Reef Run, do not look as polished as the game itself. And as far as the functionality, it is not entirely clear to me that I can swipe to get to different worlds.
Game is great, art is great, but those two things caught my eye.
Gotchya! Thanks for elaborating, that’s perfect. I completely agree on those parts, I think there’ll probably be another iteration down the road on this. Thanks man!
Congrats for being featured byApple. As already stated, the only problem is that the menu images are too much pixelated in retina iPad. Otherwise the game is very well made, easy to play and polished. Good luck!
Thanks for feedback! Let’s see if we can notch it up a bit for next release. A couple of things are a bit lo-res cause we were a bit worried breaching the 50 bar with such small margins. Thanks for kind words!
