It used to stick to one sorting method: if 2 assets had the same name, the prefix or maybe the type was use as tie-break.
Now, it’s random.

Could you please expand on why you think the sorting is erratic? I looked into the ticket, but I did not see further description.

I can see the image, what I can’t see is the difference. Maybe if you would share the filenames as well it would help.
I also tried this out myself in a project, it seems like a simple alphabetical order. If the name is the same it continues with the extension.

Yep, they are indeed in alphabetical order. This is expected behaviour, not random, not a bug.
what is see is for matching prefix, extension is unsorted. def a regression.

From what I see it goes like: .asset, then .prefab for each name. The icons on your screenshot show that you are looking at the same thing.
